Art museums and galleries to recommend?
Posted September 25th, 2011 - 12:22 pm by from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Permalink)

I'm an art lover who will be in HK 2 Oct - 5 Oct.
Am hoping to be able to checkout the art in Hong Kong and would appreciate if anyone could recommend some museums/galleries or openings/shows.

I'm hoping to be able to attend the Fine Art Asia 2011 Fair.

Warm Regards,

When you arrive at Hong Kong, get into any Pacific Coffee or starbucks and grab a free map called "Art Map" with most of the galleries and art happenings in Hong Kong. if you couldn't find it, most of the galleries gathered alone Hollywood Road, Central. Like Osage and SCAD

Thanks for the headsup with the Art Maps, i'm sure it'll be of great help!

Will check out Osage and SCAD as suggested when i'm in the area too! (:

Hi Jessica,

For your kind reference, there is also a free magazine called the HK Magazine available in various coffee shops and bars. You can check out the online version http://hk.asia-city.com/ for some updates on recent art events.

Also, a paid magazine called the TimeOut Hong Kong (Online version: http://www.timeout.com.hk/) available in major bookstores could also give you some ideas on the happenings around town.

Enjoy :)

Hi Issac,

Thanks! HK Mag is like the gallery guide in town ey?
Will begin my hunt at coffee places then! (:

Yup, heard of TimeOut bt is it more of a lifestyle mag which has a prominent coverage on art + design?

Nope Jessica,

Both HKMag and TimeOutHK are lifestyle magazines. Maybe let me put it in this way for a better clarification:

(1) Art newsletters:
- Art Map (mainly traditional arts mostly covering on concerts and stage drama)

(2) Lifestlye magazines:
- HKMag (Mainly about happenings, Indie Band performance, DJ@Nightclubs and pop-up galleries)

If you are looking for long-running galleries instead of art events, Olive is right - Check out the galleries alongside Hollywood Road, Central, Sheung Wan and Wanchai. If you need the exact locations, check them out at http://www.hongkongartwalk.com/2011/galleries.html#Mg.

By the way do you need me as a guide? I am kinda interested in crawling the galleries :P
