Hiking & Weather/Gear in early May

Mt Esja is a nice one, it's not too strenuous, but if you aren't used to going up hill, you'll be taking a few rest breaks :)

It's definitely easily doable as a day trip, i think it takes roughly half an hour or 45 minutes to get there by bus (less by car if you don't have to wait for bus exchange, etc). If you have a rental car, you can really take as long as you like because there's a lot of daylight these days.

For hiking gear, if you are just doing day-trips, just make sure you have food for snacks, and some layers of clothing. You will warm up and cool down often if you aren't familiar with exactly what you like wearing, so it's important to have layers. (I usually bring a light jacket and a heavy jacket). Other than that, good boots, a comfortable backpack, and water. That's it! (Wool socks are great if you have them for up here in Iceland)
