Ideas for events organizers

There are events which reach a critical mass on the CS events pages which tip the point from only local surfer to area users- these are generally advertised- suck as invasions, couch crashes, or annual events (tent crash) but some are not, I've heard of pot lucks gaining mass to the point where the event was large enough to draw neighboring cities.

Couch Surfing has been around for a while now and I'm curious as to how other areas interact on event coordination. The base unit for organizing an event as far as I can tell is the city. But how many surfers activly check their neighboring cities groups, are ambassadors promoting their groups to travel, what creates the urge for cities to start interacting as groups rather than individuals. I know these questions are broad and somewhat general; but I'm curious to know how CS can constantly improve itself, provide opportunities for people to grow, and more connections to be made.
