Sailing/diving trip to Indonesia. Any secret dive spots?
Posted December 22nd, 2012 - 1:06 am by from Cairns, Australia (Permalink)
Hi everyone!
I'm sailing around the world and have made it from Canada, to Australia so far. After the Great Barrier Reef, I'll head to Indonesia in July or so.
I'm totally set up to dive anywhere (compressor, tanks, gear) and I want to make the most of this unique opportunity I have to explore some of the best diving in Indonesia.
I'm thinking of heading to the Banda islands first, and from there, who knows. I'll just let the best diving I can find be my guide!
Does anyone know of any incredible spots that may be off the beaten track a bit? I'd also like to hit the more popular places too so any information you have on those would be good too.
Optimally, I'm looking for spots that have a secure anchorage, and diving within 2 or 3 miles from there. (I have a dingy to get to the dive spots)
Also, does anyone know if I can stay in the region, weather wise, for both seasons? Like stay from July to April of the following year?

I might also have a spot for someone keen, a very good diver, and adventurous to come along.
Thanks in advance CSer's!
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Ksenia,
Thank you so much for all the information!
I'm thinking of making my first landfall/check in, at Ambon and from there make my way up to Raja Ampat. It sounds so good there, I might be there for a few months...
I have heard a bit about Komodo and its currents. Thanks for the scoop on that too.
You wouldn't happen to have any GPS waypoints for any dives would you?
Thanks again and all the best in your adventures!
Mark.

Could anyone confirm that diving in lombok/gili islands is best from april/june over the summer, instead of february-march?

Yes summer is definitely better.
Went diving in Gili T last September; visibility was like 30m!
Went diving 6 times last Dec visibility was around 7m for all the dives.
Throughout the year, you would still see bumpheads and tons of turtles though :)
Plus, it rains a lot in the 'rainy' seasons; you wouldn't wanna be soaking wet going to the full moon party.
Have fun!

Ps. If you end up going to Gili T; stop by diversia dive center! Very nice people there. :)

Hi Ayu,
Thanks for the information!
I plan on stopping at Gili and will definitely stop by the diversea dive center.
All the best in your adventures!

Hi Reza,
Thank you very much for the information. I'll add them to my research list!
Let's keep in touch and maybe we can meet up for some diving when I get there!
Cheers,
Mark
