Visit Mitchells Plain Athlone with ex-District 6 resident
Hi Cape Town volunteers!
I first met Abu, a volunteer at District 6 museum in Nov 2010. He was around 20 years old when the Group Areas Act forcibly displaced the District 6 community to the Cape Flats, especially to Mitchells Plain. The history of District 6 was presented in the movie "District 9" in 2009.
"Mitchells Plain is a largely coloured township about 20 km from the city of Cape Town. It is one of South Africa's largest townships. It is located on the Cape Flats on the False Bay coast between Strandfontein and Khayelitsha. Conceived of as a "model township" by the apartheid government, it was built during the 1970s to provide housing for coloured victims of forced removal due to the implementation of the Group Areas Act. Though Mitchells Plain is no longer officially a "coloured african township, the majority remain overwhelmingly Coloured African."

I have been meeting with Abu at least once a month since then, learning about District 6 through his eyes. He is incredibly kind and a grandfather figure, it's been such a gift to see today's Zonnebloem through his eyes.
Where did all the residents go? What happened to their lives, after the displacement to the Cape Flats? I will love to meet the community in person.
Abu has kindly invited us to visit Mitchells Plain, where they will be having a Saturday market on Dec 3rd. I will have more details when we meet next Tuesday, on Nov 29th.
Let me know if you are keen to join, we can carpool or take a mini taxi out as a group. Please RSVP on this CS event, and drop me a personal message with your contact number.
