*The Anticorp Group calls on you : sign the petition against the new legal structure of CouchSurfing. *

To Couchsurfing Founders and Members,

CouchSurfing was created at Casey Fenton's initiative in 2003.
CouchSurfing's mission represented for the members an alternative to the dominant materialist values of our time. Refusing selfishness, indifference, individualism, we chose to offer sharing and exchange, diversity and hospitality. We learnt to enrich each other. We embraced cultural diversity. We have broken barriers. We wanted and still want to build a better world, couch after couch.

We learnt that a stranger is a friend we haven't met yet.

Casey Fenton gave much of his time and energy to build the CouchSurfing platform. But in this fabulous adventure, he did not stand alone very long. Volunteers from all over the world have been working together to build a community which is now part of their lives. This work involved thousands of members who gave as much as he did to build the community. This website has become finally one of the biggest human, non-profit, and worldwide projects the world has ever known yet.

But on Wednesday August 24th, 2011, CouchSurfing mutated from a non-profit organization into a for-profit corporation, a certified B-Corporation. The new corporation thus takes over the entire property of material and intellectual goods of CouchSurfing, which has been given in one way or another by the members. Its capital goes in part to the employees of CouchSurfing and in part to private investors. More than before, CouchSurfing members have had no say in the matter. The decision was taken unilaterally by the founders.

The founders told the membership that CouchSurfing was in danger, but the members were not at any point asked to step up and help. The resources and involvement of the members have been ignored and denied so as to pretend that privatization was the only and true solution to the crisis of the organization.

Today, a great proportion of CouchSurfing members are sad to hear that the organization has become a for-profit corporation. We want to protest against a minority of people taking possession of the benefits of 5 years worth of work that involved thousands of members. Money and work were contributed to CouchSurfing because it was being run as a non-profit organization, to enrich humanity and not to be stolen by the founders and be put at the mercy of private investors and commercial interests. Without the volunteers, CouchSurfing would have been worthless.

By signing this petition, you are expressing your indignation and your disapproval about what is unduly happening. Your help is critical to circulate widely this petition.

Ok, we all here agree and are already against CS becoming a corp...we don't need to sign another petition to let them know that (we have already bombarded them with mails, messages, FB, testimonials, references and so on...).

What will be the effect of the petition? How are the 50 000 singatures reach the "leaders" of CS and what do you intent to obtain by that? Because I am afraid at this point there in quite no going back to what is used to be...

Maybe I lost some info along the way (may I be excused by the highly active members here that I really didn;t have time to follow all posts)....but, what will be the next step/ what do we suggest the corp to do? :)

I believe petitions must be made for a CHANGE, not just as a form of protest.

Anca, thanks for your well meaning post.

I must once again remind you that this group is called "We are against CS becoming a corporation". The vital problem Casey poses to the CS Community does call for energetic action, and I fear you are preaching apathy yet again after a long string of empty preaching for solidarity.

It is still early days, and despite what some see as a fait accompli, I'm sure there is no pressing need for precise action until the Member Revolt entirely organised to take on, and reverse, Casey's misdeeds. And those days are not far off, Anca.

There is no urgency of course, except in maintaining member mobilisation and information. And in this respect I fully support Ronny's initiative. Have no worries, it will be followed up by more concrete measures to overcome your dubious objections, and counter your call to apathy.

(unrelated, but asked for it)

change   /tʃeɪndʒ/ verb, noun
verb (used with object)
1. to make the form, nature, content, future course, etc., of (something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone: to change one's name; to change one's opinion; to change the course of history.
2. to transform or convert (usually followed by into ): The witch changed the prince into a toad.
3. to substitute another or others for;
4. to give and take reciprocally; interchange: to change places with someone.
5. to transfer from one (conveyance) to another.

ap·a·thy   /ˈæpəθi/ noun
1. absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement.
2. lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting.
3. Also, ap·a·thei·a, ap·a·thi·a  /ˌæpəˈθiə/ Stoicism . freedom from emotion of any kind.

Now which of the above 2 words do you get by reading my previous post? :)

Anca, with all due respect, it is precisely your mixed messages that I'm highlighting.

The point I've made is that on the one hand, you claim to want change. On the other, you seem to discourage any actions that aren't on your own personal agenda, or don't fit your own goals for change (which you don't define btw).

I call that a call to apathy, or if you prefer another word, inaction (which produces the same functional result).

Perhaps you can clarify your aims in effectively discouraging participation in Ronny's initiative? Or if you prefer not to, then perhaps you can say whether you have been invited to co opt offsite initiatives in support of the group "We are against CS becoming a corporation" with the same ambiguous contributions you've made here?

Again, I'm not making the point because simply because I like being an abrasive prick, although you might have another opinion about that, and you're perfectly entitled to have, hold, and cherish that opinion. Opening a petition might not be an action in your point of view, and that's a perfectly valid point to make, if you care to do so.

I personally support Ronny's action, and encourage members to do so as well. And I will continue to support the many actions that will follow by Ronny, and the other offsite groups.

I signd the petition will ask all my friends to sign it!!

And will try to spread it with the risk of my acount being delted for the second time :)

Form casey :)

I think your IP address should be unblocked by now. I think it was the amount that you were posting, rather than what you were posting that caused your account to be deleted. This shouldn't have happened - my apologies.

But I agree with anca in this

I believe petitions must be made for a CHANGE, not just as a form of protest.

And I am am hopeing this change petition to be more emotional. And with soul ;)

I undertstend also the "arhz" post

Since I feel quite radical and virulent myself :)

Lets all sign this One it's important to support people work and good initiatives.

hope The Change petition will be great !!
And to have a pool for 2 days before making it an official
And if its more than 70%
Make it official
If not rewirte it.

Looks more legitimus :) and democratic

Lets not forget We are all fighting for the same cause
And we are all in the same boat which is kind of sinking and we are trying to save it.
So let's be unted. And let's respect eachother and eachothers oppinons !!!
Even if we don't alweys agree. And be Nice to eachother :)

Yeah, we do need petition. Why ? Because what we have done earlier is nothing but few individuals saying what they want. The point of petition is to stand behind the same idea, to show that we are all together and want the same thing.

So, please help to get people active and sign the petition.

Email all of your friends asking to sign it and ask them to email all of their friends. Now is the time to reach the people who don't follow the groups. There is thousands and thousands of people who would sign the petition but they don't have a clue it even exists. They most likely don't even have a clue what bad is going on in CS !

We need to get together !

the first important step is to make it public in the whole group. then you would get over 2000 signatures.
so post the link at the most visible place! and can you arrange smth for the petition to be visible among the polls?
by the way, I cannot sign it, cause they say my mail adress is invalid, but Ill post the link!

by the way, didnt you think of directing this petition to someone else, and not CS founders? is there a way that someone could force them to make the decision?

Yeah, the only countable/money making effect for the corporation that this group has produced so far is a looot of traffic for their counters :)
