Considering how CS tries to get ownership of our data I guess it is fair to say that CS sucks, and not just data.

Interesting Leo, but by asking surfers to send you email address and phone number over the CS servers, aren't you encouraging them to use non-compliant servers and to make that data the property of CouchSurfing International, Inc.?

An alternative, besides BeWelcome, would be to indicate a specific email address (e.g. Gmail) where guests can contact you without going through CS servers.

click on the calendar and you will see ....
after all people want to know when can send a request !

PS: e-mail address is a "non sensitive personal data" so rules are a bit relaxed.

PS2: and that one is not my personal address, is an address that change every 15 days ...

"PS: e-mail address is a "non sensitive personal data" so rules are a bit relaxed."

"PS2: and that one is not my personal address, is an address that change every 15 days ... "

If you change your address every 15 days, a per PS2, I guess you acknowledge that email addresses are sensitive data, the kind of data that you don't want to make part of the content which CS Inc. tries to own.

The question is if anything that you upload to CS servers, including your CS mailbox, is covered by the Terms of Use.

no are not "sensitive" in the strict term. it serves just to avoid spam and to avoid people to use an old version of message.

That brought me to an idea: I'll send this mail to those who wrote references for me. Please feel free to copy and send it to your contacts! German version below! (May be s.o. could make translations to other popular languages?)

My Dear!

After CS went commercial (some say it was stolen from the volunteers), changed the terms of use and the privacy regulations, after openly stating that CS would sell our (travel) data, after claiming the rights to manipulate our pictures and texts (all in power from September 14, 2012), it is time to move on to an alternative site. For me this is www.bewelcome.org, because this site is owned by an French NGO that by law can't privatize the site. Moving means loosing “social capital”: the references that were collected in many years. What can be done about that: Ask those who left references for you to register on BeWelcome (you may just copy this mail and send it to them) and to copy the references to your profile there. I hereby ask you to do the same with the reference you wrote for me. I will immediately do the same with the reference I left for you.
More information about privatisation and the concequences you can find in the discussions in this group:

And on this site: http://couchwiki.org/en/CouchSurfing_conversion_issues

Hallo!

french translation of your message :

Salut,

A short feed back about reactions to the letter I sent to my contacts two weeks ago (see above, thanks for the translations!!!). Five out of 33 who wrote references for me registered on BW and copied their references to my profile there. I don't know, whether they sent the text to their contacts, but hopefully some of them did. In other words: Slightly more than 10% reacted. Not too bad, I think. Other experiences? I recommend you to try!

Best regards from Kiev

Krischaan
