Anyone know of places to camp nearby?

So me and some friends want to find a cool place to go camping. We want to be taking public transportation so preferably it would be a place we could get to for relatively cheap on public transport (from NYC) Any Ideas?

Also if anyone has any info on getting cheap tents and stuff like that I have never done any real camping before and am interested in learning the tricks of the trade.

Oh and a last thing, if anyone knows, do you need to have an official camp ground to legally camp someplace? Can I just throw down a tent on some beautiful public beach and hang out there for a night or two?

There's tons of camping in the Catskill mountains and along the Appalachian Trail... not too sure which are close to camping, but could try Woodstock. Not too sure if they allow camping in Harriman State Park. Don't know of any NY beaches you could just throw a tent down on- could try Hither Hills out near Montauk for the closest in beach camping in NY.

For cheap tents etc, you could try Target or Walmart, they do have some decent ones surprisingly.

But for quality stuff at reasonable prices, can't beat Campmor in NJ. Sometimes I check out the gear at REI, Eastern Mountain Sports or Paragon Sports (all in Manhattan) then buy it online from Campmor if I can't get down there. Tent and Trails down by World Trade Center is also an excellent place to get stuff- they are experts at what they carry and have a good selection of trail maps.

Get to Catskills if you can, this was from a camping trip out there: http://www.youtube.com/user/ihikearoundcom?feature=mhee#p/u/5/q9s7G5NYYX0

If you want, anyone who is interested, we could meet up in Manhattan and plan out some days for hiking/camping. I'll be down for hiking anytime in August. Drop me a message if you're interested :)

I think if we could get a group together from CS to go camping we would have a sick time. I'm going to look into making an event. Hope you will all come too.

Has anything been planned or talked about????

I'm down! I'm coming up on my first year in New York, and I'd love to get some camping done this summer. The farthest east I've ever been is PA, but it was beautiful. I've heard lots of great things about the Catskills.

Please let me know if anything's being put together.

LIGHT AND LOVE.

Before you going to try pinch your tent better to do some research trough Internet about the place where you go. Everywhere different rules and regulations. Easy to run into the fine for breaking some rules.

Actually cheap not always good. Tent should have rain fly that provided cover almost to the ground. Better before to buy anything to do some reasearch about product. Internet is ideal place for it. Bunch of stuff available from www.campmore.com
www.sunnysports.com
www.ems.com
www.rei.com
