traveling to egypt in march/solo female?
Posted February 8th, 2013 - 5:54 am by from Mamaroneck, United States (Permalink)
Hey guys,
I'm scheduled to go to Egypt in march for 2-3 weeks, but my travel buddy just dropped out. Anyone interested in joining me? Or does anyone know of anyone who's done Egypt as a single female? I really don't want to cancel my flight, but I also don't want to go if it's not safe.
Thanks!

As an outsider, I dont think Egypt is unsafe for solo female travelers. Its just that you have to take normal precautions. If you have been to places in the East, e.g. around Asia, Middle East, or Africa, then it must not be a big issue and then you will not be the only solo female traveler there...

So no need to cancel your trip, imho...

Good Luck

"Is really funny that only guys are commenting this post and offering help."

It is funnier that 2 out of 5 responses above are from females, after including your response it is 3 out of 6!

Isn't it too stereotypical?

Yes I agree. For a solo female traveler, tips by another solo female traveler would be of great help. And I agree that Karen's tips are very insightful and helpful.

We travel as a family, with two kids, and always share tips with other traveling families, so I can relate to that.

But I really could not understand the statement:

"Is really funny that only guys are commenting this post and offering help."

You can see yourself that this post is not responded by guys 'only'!

Or I am missing something?

sexual harassment exists all over the world. but the difference is how the society, government handle the problem.
have you seen this prize-awarded film?

Hey Karen,
Thanks for the feedback. As you said, that's really what I was looking for: feedback from other female travelers. The responses from some of the guys are nice but completely unhelpful. I actually already had some of my clothes temporarily altered to be more practical in the middle east. A lot of this is also true in India, I think just more so in the Arab world.
Anyway, thanks a lot to you and everyone else who provided feedback about their experiences! Please let me know if you think of anything else.

Just like Beyonce said "put a ring on it" and if someone asks about your marital status say you are married to an Egyptian, I'm not kidding.

Avoid talking religion but get ready that people will ask which one do you follow, you should answer either muslim or christian.(has nothing to do with being female, general rule)

Don't stress too much and enjoy your travel :)

Hi!
I am coming to Egypt as well over the Easter period. I was wondering if any one had any advice on the best way to get to Alexandria? Is there a train that goes there, what will the cost be like?
Also if any one could recommend a nice hotel there, pool, close to the beach, not too far from town center!
Thanks! Can not wait to explore your country!

@ Bex
try to request a couch as it is better than to stay in a hotel and u will find it easy to know the secrets of the city from a local person also the train from Cairo to Alex is ok and u will find also alot of bus companies

Posted February 14th, 2013 - 8:34 pm by from London, England (Permalink)
Thanks for that! I want to stay in a nice hotel/resort for a bit of a treat :)

Posted February 14th, 2013 - 8:33 pm by from Alexandria, Egypt (Permalink)
Hi Bex,

Train is probably the best way to get to Alex, Assuming you'll be coming from Cairo the ride takes between 2.5 to 3 hours. a 2nd class ticket would be 35 EGP and a first Class is 50 EGP, the good thing about First class is you can book a Single Seat, i.e you don't need to be dealing with the weird person next to you.

If you don't mind spending some money, I would recommend Mediterranean Azur Hotel, it has a beach and a pool, 10 minutes away from downtown, a taxi would be like 15 L.E, there are a lot of Cafes and restaurants from a walking distance near the hotel.

Alexandria is a beautiful city and there is no better time to visit it than the dates you stated.

Sexual harrasement in Egypt is epidemic and more & more becoming endemic, and people who don't admit that are either ignorant, in a state of denial or sex offenders themselves.
