That's cool you'll be in Dublin. Don't know anyone in Dublin who hosts, so just look on couchsurf, you should be fine! Alternatively there are a lot of decent cheap hostels in Dublin, you should be able to get a bed for around 20euro a night.
As for stuff to do in Dublin, here are a few places I would recommend:
Good bars: the bernard shaw, the snail bar, pygmalion, sin é, the porterhouse... the list could go on :) In general I would say stay away from the Temple Bar area if going out at night, it's full of extremely touristy fake Irish bars where you will be ripped off! But it would be a good place to meet other (drunk) tourists I suppose.
In terms of gay bars, there are very few: the George is the biggest one, but there are also the Front Lounge, Panti Bar and The Dragon (more of a club). All of these and the bars above are within walking distance of eachother and they all have a mixed crowd (the bernard shaw is quite hipstery though).
During the day, I would recommend going to Howth or Dun Laoghaire if the weather is nice, they're both nice seaside towns that you can get to by DART (like the BART but only one line)... a nice park in the city (again, weather permitting) would be The Iveagh Gardens, it's a little bit hidden away so it's usually not crowded on sunny days. I would also go out to Phoenix Park, it's the biggest park in the city and covers a similar area to the entire inner city - the president's house is here and there is a also a large herd of wild deer that move around the park, it's fun to try and find them!
Nice cafes include The Twisted Pepper (during the day, a night it's a club), Wall and Keogh, Fixx Coffee and The Bald Barista.
