First time in Ethiopia!
Posted January 2nd, 2013 - 3:19 am by from Calgary, Canada (Permalink)
Hello All! I will be visiting Ethiopia independently in the beginning of february 2013, and am just trying to plan out an itinerary and get things sorted...thought id write a little post here!
:)

I am planning on taking advantage of the full month allowed by the visa on arrival in Addis, and so far think i will go to Addis, Bahir Dar, Gonder, Axum, Lalibela and Harar. is 4 weeks enough time for all this? I was hoping to take buses to keep it cheap, and ive heard it can be a long haul, but ive traveled a lot and think ill be fine.

How are the buses in Ethiopia? and the weather in February?
Also, does anyone know if you need a return ticket when you arrive in Ethiopia, or proof of onward travel? i think im heading via flight to Nairobi afterwards so i should be okay...but still, just wondering?

I am hoping to see some wildlife, and have read the Simien mountains are nice, but also the Bale. is it hard to get to the Bale mountains alone, or do you need to do a tour?

Lastly....any other travellers, did you bother to get the Meningitis shot? i am 30, and sort of past the age that i think it strikes most...it is expensive so im just wondering how much i need it. Got the yellow fever jab, and a prescription for anti-malarials so i think im good on the health front!

anyways...ANY tips and such from locals or other travelrs who might be in the area at the same time are greatly appreciated...let me know if youd like to meet up too!

xo from Canada and happy new year!

Hi Napoleon, I am sure one month is enough to visit the Northern Historic route and Harar. There are modern buses there days linked most of the big cities. The weather is very beautiful in February, most of the days sunny! When arrival you can buy your visa with 20 USD at the airport and it works for three months. You don't to have a return ticket. You can include the Semien mountain into your itinerary when you tour the North. After Gondar you can go to Semein mountain and trek there. There are also the endemic Gelada Baboon and Ibex. The Bale mountain is such an amazing place not to miss but it is on the other direction. I am happy to meet you and have a cup of coffee when arrive.

because i had heard, perhaps incorrectly that you need a ticket out of Ethiopia, when they let you in at the airport (maybe not at land borders).

i was warned a similar thing about Egypt and it ended up being nonsense...but more recent research leads me to believe it is true when you arrive via plane in Addis.

as well the road on the Kenya side of the border apparently is pretty bad and sometimes you need to travel in a convoy?

also, ethiopian airlines is pretty reasonable.

Hi all,

i never herd of about asked a return Ticket on airport but it is quite true you will be asked a return Ticket in Et. Embassies of some East African countries Kenya , Uganda.
It is always advisable to secure your visa from your country by in person or through mail with the necessary documents fee. See more info on ethiopian embassy webpages in your country.

We know people who inter the country via air or overland and out over land. With out a return Ticket.

I would like to know from any one if it really happens to some one.

Hi Julia,
I will travel to Ethiopia in 10 days, too, and did not get any meningitis vaccination either. My yellow fever vaccination from 3 years ago should still be effective, and I take malaria pills with me on standby as well as a very small (indeed tiny) first-aid kit.

Hello! i plan to arrive probably on Feb 1st or 2nd as well! I think I will be staying at the Taitu hotel in Addis (supposed to be cheap and in a cool old building), so if you stay there too, let me know and we can meet up!

Ive been researching if one is able to do any type of safari like experience in Ethiopia - apparently there are Lions and Wild dogs and Zebras and stuff in the Bale mountains i think, is anyone interested in doing that as well?

Hi,
My girlfriend and I are going to visit Ethiopia for the first time on 25th February. And I have a few questions. We are lithuanians, so we cannot expect to get visa on arrival in the airport. But some information about such possibility was written in Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs webpage:
If tourists from such countries wish to get a visa on arrival at the airport, they are required to get approval from the Immigration and Nationality Affairs Main Department in Ethiopia. Requests for such approval can be sent to: Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs, PO Box 3741, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Email: mdina@ethionet.et
Maybe someone here used this possibility and can tell us what kind of documents we need to send to the given email for such approval? Thanks...

Hey, i think i might stay at the Baro instead, as the Taitu is a bit out of my price range at 25 a night....unless anyone wants to host me? hehe. :)

Does anyone have an email contact for the Baro? i cant find a website or anything but tripadvisor says to "book ahead".

thanks!
