Night busses

Do night busses run in Ethiopia? I am particularly interested to hear whether it is possible to catch an evening/night bus from Lalibela to Mekele. Would it be possible to hire a private driver?

Thank you for your help and comments!

Hi Gay,

no , there is no night bus in Ethiopia. But there is a mini Van. Very risky in accidents.

I don't think you can also find a direct bus from lalibela to Mekele even on day light. Your chance is to go to Dese and take Bus .

Renting a car is good but with that price you can fly to Mekele.

So i Advice you to fly.

Dear Nureign,

Thank you for your reply! I am at present working on a tentative itinerary for my stay in Ethiopia. I plan to spend two days in Lalibela (the 21 and 22 March). On the 23 March I intend to go on an excursion covering the Danakil Depression. Excursions usually set off early in the morning from Mekele and in order to save time I thought about a night bus. I looked on the Ethiopian Airlines website and did not find a flight between Lalibela and Mekele.

I suppose I will have to postpone my excursion by one day and travel between Lalibela and Mekele during the day via Dessie.

Warm regards,

I would also want to ask about buses from Lalibela to Mekele. Is it possible to make all the road in one day changing buses in Dese or in some other town?

dear Gabby,

you are in limited time . in my opinion it is better if you give a two day if you think you are going on the road . fly Via addis ababa to mekele which will cost you 2550 birr if you book it hear in ethiopia. if you can find a trust worthy Driver with A car ( no show up! ) take that also an option.

hear is how you can go by bus

From Lalibela take the bus to weldiya when you reach on the asphalt road tell the driver or some one who speak english you want to go to Mekel . and if it is possible to switch you on the bus who come on the opposite direction to mekele. it is also good to take buses which go to towns in the direction of Mekele such as Korem, maychew. then switch to buses to mekele . if all thi not possible waite the bus from Desse to mekele at weldya . or take the mornng bus from weldya to Mkele

for poepl like you in such short period i cant recommend this riding in a bus .

for other people it is actually great and possibly to see some churches and lake Ashenge alng theire way to mekele .

I PM you with contacts in Lalibela.

@ ED make your day flexable and you can reach Mekele with in A day or 2 from Llibela

Fly. It's worth your safety, your time and your sanity!

Just my 2 cents from having lived there for almost 1 year and traveled all around...
