Iceland in March 2013

Hello everyone,

I will go discovering Iceland from March 8th to March 28th and will start visiting from Reykjavik :), then explore the whole country by bus and maybe by car if anyone that would visit the country around these dates want to share a drive...

Knowing that the weather is unpredictable in March especially in the West fjords, can you please tell me if it is still possible to go see the main sites by bus up there. I started to make some research but didn't find lot of info.

Takk !!!

Can't wait to be there, go hunting the northern lights, diving in the Silfra, make some trek and see some trolls :)))!

i would think all the main places will be open here in march although there may be bad weather days where you may be stuck in rvk or somewhere else but i don´t see march as being as bad as december - january weather and daylight-wise. the summer places (interior, westfjords etc) will still be mainly unreachable but there is plenty of other things to do for sure.

Takk James !

Ok I will keep that in mind, will not be sad to stay stuck somewhere in Reyjavik or any other place, that would be great to stay stuck and just enjoying free time near the Artic circle :))

Hi Jacqueline!

I am actually planning to go to Iceland at about the same time (though only for a week)!!! I am still planning exactly when I would go but I am guessing around the second week of March and it would be wonderful to maybe explore some of Iceland, go northern light/troll hunting, and hike around a bit together if you are interested and if the dates work out :)

I too have been researching buses and it looks like it is a lot easier to see the country by car. (There are also little "local tours" around Iceland that don't seem super expensive so I guess that's always a possibility too).

Either way I am excited to hear from someone else heading that way at the same time :)

sincerely,

Vanessa

Hi guys,

My BF & me are going to be there in mid march and are planing to rent a car, so wouldn't mind sharing rides to S and SW Iceland, trolls and lights including. I believe we'll have the car from 19-23 (this could change). so... we can talk!

Hi all!

I might be there too around those dates and in that case looking for transportation. I'll let you know once I'm sure if I'm going.

Hi Kate,

Taking the bus or a flight is pretty the same, around 180 dollars for a round trip from Reykjavik to Akureyri.

By bus, we have Sterna, here is the link to check the schedule and prices : http://www.sterna.is/en/moya/ferdir/hopurview/60_60a_-_akureyri_-_reykjavik_-_

Or by flight it would be with Air Iceland.

I would say 4/5 days to visit Akureyri and around, check Myvatn, Krafla, Jokulsargljufur, Husavik, well this is what I initially planned between March 22 to March 27 :).

But will gladly have a coffee with you when being there.

Cheers,
Jacqueline

We've had a "bad" experience with our SADcar 4x4. It broke in the middle of nowhere, on the way to Landmannalaugar.

In the end, someone from SADcars came tow us in the middle of the night. They brought us a new car, and we kept on travelling without worries the next day!

They were super nice about it. Everyone was safe and sound, and it became one of the most memorable moment of my trip in Iceland.

SADcars are cheap, the cars are older, but at least I can tell you that they were very nice to us. And you could have as much problem with any rental company I believe...

Anyway, you do what you want, but I hope you can keep in mind that Iceland is a place for adventure, and being in the middle of an unpredictable nature, anything can happen. :)

Hullo everyone! I realise that I might be a tad late, but two of us will be in Iceland starting Patrick's day (17th of March) until the the 21st. Now here's the cheeky, tricky bit: Neither of us have a licence, but we'll be able to provide excellent map reading, music, jokes, and tea. We're also bringing a tent, so if anybody fancies joining forces, get in touch!! I do realise that not being able to drive is pretty useless, but we might be able to come to some form of agreement, e.g. us paying a bit more for car rental...? Really looking forward to hearing from any of you that might still be available for adventure!
