Considering going to Iceland before Western Europe
Posted December 20th, 2012 - 9:49 pm by from Chicago, United States (Permalink)
I have 17 days for a trip I'm taking in April or May. I was planning on going to 3 cities in that time: Prague, Munich, Zurich. But I feel like I can fit in another location and still enjoy my time. I've always wanted to go to Iceland... would it be crazy to fly there then fly to Prague and start my western European travels?

I live in Chicago but there are pretty cheap flights from NYC to Reykjavík, Iceland (around 500 or 600 one way). The idea would be I fly there, stay for 3 days then fly to Prague where I would take the train around Western Europe then eventually fly back to Chicago from Zurich. I know Iceland isn't really "on the way" to any of my destinations, and I don't know much about it, other than it looks absolutely beautiful.

How easy is it to get around? Would I need to rent a car? I imagine this would be a good place to meet a fellow couchsurfer to host me :)

Thoughts?

I'm not an Icelander either, but visited a couple years ago. You will definitely need a car. If I only had three days, I would explore Reykjavik, do the Golden Circle tour, and explore western Iceland, maybe driving to see Snæfellsjökull, hugging the coast as I drive. Western Iceland is often overlooked, but extremely beautiful. There are caves with tours and craters and a huge mountain. :-)

that's what i did before going to europe-- stopover in reykjavik, but for 2 weeks. and you're right, it's awesome, and that's why i'm here for 3 weeks on my way back to canada.

anyway, rent a car. in 3 days, you could do the south coast-- like jokulsarlon and back. lots to see a long the way, could even do some half-day hikes. but if you want to see reykjavik, give yourself at least a couple days and rent a car for the last day, but you definitely won't get to see as much. maybe like golden circle, but that's about it.

Sadly, no couch here, but I'd deffo rent a car. Public transport isn't that amazing once you need to go out of Reykjavik, and the offered tours are kind of expensive. Do take care when renting a car though that you follow the rules. It wouldn't be the first time a tourist went off track and had to be rescued. Mind you conditions in winter to drive here can be quite bad, especially on the gravel roads.
