Is it safe to cycle around the country?

I'm planning to come up to Iceland in February; my hope is to be able to cycle to get from place to place. I know that it will take a long time, but that's ok. I do not know what the road is like though, would it be safe?

if you get tyres with spikes and if snow is not to deep - which i would assume for ring road -it should be ok ( no chance for any other road but i have never been to iceland in the winter... so the locals would no much better )
i can only talk about feasability in general to travel by bike in the winter from experience.
BUT you would need serious expediton gear a 4 season sleeping bag best a sheepskin and an insultation matrass to sleep on and a biwack.and loads of closing as you will be hot and sweaty when you cycle and get very very cold as soon as you stop .
if it was your first trip in those conditions I would not suggest it, at all, and it would be wise to have another person with you.
and you certainly need to be an decent bike mechanic
as cassettes and other gear will need to be maintained
and you need to be decent with trouble shouting and understand how your bike works. as the snow will cause issues from time to time.

hope that helps a bit .

Thank you both for the advice, I probably will not try to cycle this time during the winter.

I think that is a good decision Link, I only recommend cycling in the summer time, no way during heavy winter like it's up North right now.

There was a cycler from Germany in the north in September who was very lucky to find shelter during or just before a snow storm in the north. Really not a good idea in winter, keep it for summer. In Myvatn area it can even get to -10 and stuff.

I´d like to know myself how safe it is to go by bike in northern Iceland... I don´t want to travel around the country by bike but want to do short day trips (like in the westfjords) with a friend in end of april... Is it more safe that time of year around there?? Or is there another way to get around there?? Thanks for your help!! Cheers, Josi.
