Stay in the Southwest or go all the way around?

Hi everyone,
I am planning to spend a week in Iceland this summer. We are renting a car...this is gonna be the first time for all of us. What would you think a better option is: drive all the way around Route 1 or stay closer to Rejkyavik and explore the Southwest in more detail? Or may be there is a third option I am not thinking of?
Thank you for your input!

I second BrittaM. Snæfellsnes peninsula is mini-Iceland and well worth 3 days.

There is also a fjord halfway from Reyjkjavik to the peninsula we really enjoyed for hiking.

If you want to see seals up close, go to the youth hostel Osar on the Vatnsnes Peninsula, they are right in front of the hostel. We really enjoyed a tour around Vatnsnes. No people, lots of wind.

If the weather is good, Skaftafell/Jökulsárlón is worth a stretch.

In case you don't mind the drive, go to Myvatn, really worth it. I think it is doable to combine some of this into one week, but you should be prepare to drive long stretches. And don't miss to book well in advance if you want to stay in hostels. Popular destinations might be booked out by now already. Camping is possible, but rain and storm are no strangers to Iceland, even in summer.

Hi everyone!

My husband and I are planning our trip to Iceland, and we were wandering about the same thing. We will stay there from 1st of June till the 11th.
We will rent a car, but not sure if we want to go all around the island or just visit some parts of it.

I already pinpointed a few nice places on the map but not so sure how to reach them. Do you know if there is something available on-line like a detailed itinerary with maps and directions, which road to take or something like that?

Thank you everybody for your input! I guess the vote is pretty unanimous: makes the decision making pretty easy :)

I am also wondering if anybody ever took the Ferry Baldur and if it is worth it in terms of saving the time and what you get to see on your way if you take the ferry versus drive.
