Vegans in Turkey
Posted January 28th, 2012 - 5:24 am by from Edmonton, Canada (Permalink)
My friend and I both vegans are travelling to turkey come May.
Are there any vegan restaurants, or dishes recommended? Or anything to steer clear of?

thanks.

Hi Alyson,

Restaurants totally depend where you are heading up to. In Istanbul there're quite enough but I can't say the same for the other (even big) cities... For Istanbul this is a good source I assume since I don't live in Turkey for some long.

By thinking you'll be there in May, I can say that it's not that hard to survive as a vegan because there're quite many amounts and varieties of fruits and vegetables and you can find them in every little corner from stands or once/twice a week huge open markets. The main rule is how far you go out from the centre that organic food you can get.

Most of my vegan friends think that you can find falafel everywhere, sorry to say that but it's not common in Turkey.

About the dishes, every region has its own special dishes so if you send me details about your destination, I'll try to help you. When you eat out even the dishes are without meat it's quite common to use butter or other dairy ingredients.

I'm ending my message adding a Turkish sentence which says you're a vegetarian (because most of the people won't understand what vegan means) and you don't eat meat, fish, eggs, butter, milk and dairy products. You can write it down and show people who don't speak English when you need to.

Ben vejetaryenim. ET, BALIK, YUMURTA, TEREYAĞI, SÜT ve SÜT ÜRÜNLERİ yemiyorum!

İlginize teşekkür ederim. (Which means thank you for your attention ;))

If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask, I'll try to help as far as I can.

I hope you enjoy your time in my country.
