Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely try the sunrise market!

cheap grocery stores
If you don't want to pay a fortune and shop at safeway, these are some other alternatives:
Sunrise market in chinatown Gore & Powell St. - Cheap, Cheap, Cheap veggies. They also have a butcher that is priced fairly good
BuyLow (the eastside ones are better then the west) buylow is a mix, but is better then the standard grocery stores and the mark downs at night and sale prices can be great.
The great Canadian Superstore - In case you want to buy cereal for 3 months, they have enormous bulk, but also standard sizes. Nuts, cheeze, beans, pasta- basically any large stock staples are best bought here. Indian brand spices can be found here or buylow and are way cheaper. I usually don't buy veggies here, the prices aren't super and the quality is so-so.
commercial dive & brodway just west of macdonald. These places are way cheaper and the eastside and westside prices are the same. There is usually a few places close together. Either walk into a few and pick for then on, or just try the busiest- usually tends to be the best.
