Any Long Island polyglots?
Posted July 28th, 2012 - 4:01 pm by from Astoria, United States (Permalink)
Hi all! I'm a LIer who has lived in France and traveled a lot around Europe, and I very much miss the multinational, multilingual culture I found over there (and in particular, I miss speaking French!). I came across a few language meetups there, where people meet in a bar or coffee shop and practice speaking various languages.

This seems like it would be a great thing to happen here on Long Island, either for Americans looking to practice other languages or people from other countries who want to practice English or speak their native languages. If you'd be interested in being part of something like this (or know other people who would be interested), please let me know! I'd love to organize something, and I know of a good venue here in Port Washington for it to happen.

Hi Katie!
I think that's a great idea! In South America or in Chile -we I am from- we used to do a looot of polyglot meetings, I also organized a few... I was learning French from a couchsurfer and at the same time I was teaching Spanish, and practicing my English.
And those kind of meeting are fun too, because we brought bottles of wine to share and things to eat sometimes.
I really trust in those meetings, but it seems like people need motivation here!
I have a few foreigner friends around my area (Im living in Long Beach for a while) and they would be very happy to teach or practice French, Swedish, Portuguese and Spanish with you.
I'm in if you want to organize or meet up for polyglot meetings.
Saludos!

Hi Tati, thanks for your reply! That would be great to do something with you and your friends. But it's definitely true - people need more motivation around here. I'm going to see if I can drum up some more interest around here, but hopefully it's something that can start small and build.

Anyway, I'll be in touch once I have a more organized idea going. What is your availability like? Are you and your friends able to come to Port Washington? I know a bookstore/cafe here that would love to host this kind of event.

On weekends would be great for me!
Im not sure if all of my friends would be able to go to Port Washington, because we have different schedules, but I can go with one or two and we can start teaching Spanish to all those who are interested in learn/practice it.
Let me know when you have some tentative dates and i can organize my schedule with my friends!
Saludos

This is awesome, I am very interested. In the past, I was decent with spanish, but havent used it in a few years, and quite eager to shake the rust off.

That's great! Betsyter and Daryl, are there any particular times you would want to do something like this? Maybe weekend afternoon?

Hey all! Don't know if you actually had that polyglot meeting but I'm totally down for the next one. I was living half the year in Israel and half in Thailand and i'm flying back to NY in 3 days. Would love to practice my spanish, hebrew and learn some others!
