Maybe you know someone?
I am contacting you about an eleventh grade student from Vietnam. Luong arrived to the states in August on a J-1 visa though our exchange program. The original host family Luong was placed with had a family emergency in September so I replaced him with a former Legislature in Lloyd Harbor. His new family graciously agreed to host him until I found Luong a permanent home within the Cold Spring Harbor district. The family and school have been wonderful to him. Luong speaks and understands English very well but is having trouble in school. He is very smart and has a strong work ethic so I was surprised when his guidance councilor informed me about some failing grades. Another issue is poor Luong hasn't made even one friend. He eats alone at lunch and is never invited to go anywhere with his peers. He is very shy but we believe the main issue is that the school offers no diversity even in the slightest. The school is wonderful and is doing everything they can to help but I think he would do better in a more diverse less demanding school district. We are fully regulated by the State Department and one of our guidelines is the students must maintain a C average while they are here to remain in the program. I think Luong deserves a chance in another district. I have been searching for a new host family for him and am reaching out for help. His new family would be asked to host him until June. If you happen to know a family that may be interested in more information about Luong please send them my way. He is very polite, sweet, great with little kids, smart, and speaks English well. Thank you for your time.
