The Auberge du Parc in Hautefort offer accommodation. The inn is in a very pretty location near the chateau and is one of our favourite restaurants (and a possible location for an evening meal over the weekend).

I have found this offer at a very good location (26 km of Sarlat) has several options of houses and is just 30 km from St Pardoux:

http://www.gite.com/france/four-a-sel

As this means dividing I think it is more appropriate for those who already know each other well.

Roger,
I sent a message to the owner of the Four-a-sel gite a couple of days ago inquiring if they rent other than Saturday to Saturday, however, they did not reply. Perhaps they do not check email that often. That would be a good choice should they acquiesce.
I'll not make my plane reservations until I have firm accomodations somewhere. I don't want to be "homeless" in France, especially since I do not speak French! Ha ha

Becky,

You shouldn't fear being homeless: at least that B&B in Tourtoirac is responsive. M. Guillot answers regularly the email. Perhaps at the end you may consider it.

More later, but I'm also looking for housing in Dordogne. Please count me in if you find something promising. I'll help look in a few days...

Cindy

P.S. I'm not worried about being homeless, but I agree that it would be nice to nail something down. It would also be great to have a house with a bunch of our people to share things.

I have added another column to the spreadsheet (http://ow.ly/gmbCZ) so that anyone who is looking for someone to share or who know that their B&B for example still has spaces can indicate this. This may help those who are still looking for accommodation.

This is a test reply to see if I can post -- failed once already!

Posted January 20th, 2013 - 2:21 pm by from Bradford, United States (Permalink)
Ok, I'll try again.

Thanks to Kathie and Richard for all their ideas.

Cherie and I are looking for housing and finding it very challenging. Not knowing the lay of the land or the language are two hindrances. Online maps don't tell distances, either.

I also think that there may be a great duplication of effort with several of us researching the same thing.

I have an idea for the remaining ten or so people who are looking for housing. By my count, as of today, they are:

Cindy (me)
Cherie Erwin
David Grood & Cindy
Jane Carhart
Anne Kerruish
California_Becky
Tijen
Rosemarie (rosiwien)
Roger
Susan (CalifCinnamon Girl)

My idea is that perhaps we could find a house for ten or so people and solve everyone's problem at once? They exist, and I think the cost may be effective.

What do you guys think? Is it worth getting a travel agent involved so that we just ask for something, get it, and everyone sends in a portion of the deposit to a central location?

Thanks! Let me know what you think.

Sounds good to me. Maybe this one would be nice.

http://www.vrbo.com/1015313ha

Kathy, how far is this one from your place?

Cherie

Posted January 20th, 2013 - 2:45 pm by from Bradford, United States (Permalink)
Cherie:

I've figured out that Kathie and Richard's house is in the town of St. Pantaly d'Ans.

The farmhouse you found looks fabulous, but on the map it looks quite far away (way south). But I'll look up the actual distance.

Also looks like you and I are the only ones on this today!

Cindy

Posted January 20th, 2013 - 2:47 pm by from Bradford, United States (Permalink)
The distance calculator I'm looking at says it's 105 km away. That sounds far, no?

I got up early to email before I take off for work.
Most of the others are probably enjoying their Sunday afternoons.

Friends:

I found this on HomeAway:

http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p551068a#amenities

It's in the town of La Boissiere d'Ans, which is very close to Kathie and Richard, it sleeps at least six, has internet, and is about $700 for a week ($600 plus cleaning).

The rub may be when the rental week begins -- perhaps a Saturday, but even if this is rented for two weeks ($about $1100) divided by six people divided by four nights, that's only $45 per night, no?

What do you guys think?

Cindy
Sorry if the link doesn't work, but just look for rental 551068a

Posted January 20th, 2013 - 3:40 pm by from Bradford, United States (Permalink)
If Cherie and I can find four others who are interested in renting (for the period 4/25 to 4/29, but may require renting an entire two weeks), I'm willing to start figuring out how to contact the owner.

Any takers?

this is for the La Boissiere d'ans rental on HomeAway #551068a

Cindy

I have just looked at the dates you mentioned. I don't arrive until 27th and leave on 2nd May so not sure it would fit in with you.

Anne

Posted January 20th, 2013 - 8:11 pm by from Bradford, United States (Permalink)
Except that if we DO have to rent the place for two weeks anyway (from, say April 21st to May 5th), then it would be already rented during the dates you are there and you could just pay a nightly fee (should be very low if we find other people).

You'd just be there alone for a few days, but it's 2 km from Kathie and Richard's house.

Let's keep it in mind.

Posted January 20th, 2013 - 6:15 pm by from Stoke-on-Trent, England (Permalink)
Cherie, that one is a long way from us - it's on the border of the Dordogne and the Lot et Garonne regions.

To find us on Google maps enter St Pardoux d'Ans 24640 France (or just the 24640 France would get you pretty close).

Have you looked on the accommodations list I posted?

Posted January 20th, 2013 - 6:18 pm by from Stoke-on-Trent, England (Permalink)
La Boissiere d'Ans is very close to us - the next hamlet. If you use the 'directions' option on Google maps it will give you distances.

Posted January 20th, 2013 - 6:22 pm by from Bradford, United States (Permalink)
R & K:

I've been looking at some of the ones you listed. Some of the websites are a bit funky, and one in particular keeps asking for a "better translation". That makes me a bit nervous. But I'll keep at it.

I'm glad to hear that the one in La Boissiere d'Ans is close -- it looks promising if we can get a few more folks.

Thanks for the Google maps hint -- I was going to an external site for distances -- very cumbersome.

We're learning!

Now I'm trying to figure oout how to call Europe without breaking the bank!

Cindy

Yes.
Cindy has been our brains researching all day.

IF we can get a bunch of people, she's found this for us:

http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p551068a#summary

Does that work?

THANKS for all of your help.

Cherie

That is very close to us. La Boissiere d'Ans is on the river with a very pretty waterfall.

Kathie

Posted January 21st, 2013 - 3:03 pm by from Bradford, United States (Permalink)
A CSer, Susan, is going to call the owner of the house in La Boissiere d'Ans to help me figure out the possibilities, so we're getting closer.

The people who have spoken up so far are me (Cindy), Cherie, Jane (possibly with Marion?), Becky, Patsma. Did I miss anyone?

I will post the details of what the leasing arrangements can be (owner may want to rent from Saturday to Friday, which complicates things), but it's so relatively inexpensive ($about $600 a week plus cleaning) that I think it's worth snatching up.

Marion, are you interested? What are the nights you need?

Patsma, are you staying in Dordogne until May 2nd, and thusly would be interested in staying in this house past the CS event?

I welcome ideas, and particularly hope that others will read the house listing to make sure that I'm reading it right...

Count me in - I have a PayPal account or could make electronic transfer. As I am in Europe it is no problem.

Hi Cindy,

It is easy to find distances between locations. In Google Maps you select Directions then it opens asking for start and end places. It gives then not only the driving directions but the distances depending on the route selected (you may vary).

As for sharing I am open to it, but not to lead the process. I speak French so count me to understand and explain sites in this language.

I still need a place to sleep from 26 to 29 (including). As I will be with a car the distance is not a problem but I rather stay not very far from St Pardoux.

I've been pointing some places I've found convenient in one of the threads here.

Cheers,
Roger

Roger and everyone:

I just wanted to fill everyone in on what I've figured out. I'm renting the house in La Boissiere d'Ans from April 25 until checkout on the 30th, and it appears to be filled.

Those definitely staying:

Me
Anne K. (Patsma)
Cherie Erwin
Betsy

Those I'm reserving room for in the event they decide to come:

Susan (CalifCinnamon Girl)
Carina (Iceland)

Yea! Done.

Roger, thanks for your ideas and offer to help with language and transportation. The way that the house is set up I'm afraid that there is no room to accomodate you.

If things change I will certainly let you know. I'm certain that you will figure something out between now and then.

I look forward to meeting you -- I've never met anyone from Brazil, so that makes you the official Ambassador!

Cindy

No problem, Cindy. I'm counting on getting a place to stay when arrive in France.

I hope I will be a good example of Brazilian for those who didn't met one yet.

Cheers,
Roger
