Hi Sharon. Count me in! It'll be just me, my wife has to work. I too, will be traveling space available on United. I'm thinking that, depending on space, I might start out a day or two early. But if I get there early I can stay somewhere else. Is it practical/reasonable/safe for an American to rent a car there? Or is it easy to get from the airport to where you are without a car? I'll be happy to be a taxi service for others, I love to drive, especially in other countries. But of course there is the 'space available' unknown. Let me know if you have room for me or not. If not, it's not a deal breaker......and Thanks!

Hi Sharon, I'm going to do my very best to get there. Again, depends on what the flights are like.

Like Virginia and Ken, I fly space available. Like Ken, my husband will be working, but I could use some time in Costa Rica. I would like to go, but since I don't make reservations in advance, I don't have to go. If you have room for me, great, but if not, I won't be hurt if I don't go. It looks like whether from Seattle or San Francisco, there are 3 possible connections from Houston and 2 from Newark for Ken and I, though for Virginia from Albuquerque there is only one connection through Houston each day, so hopefully we can all get there...and we want to make sure we don't make it harder for each other to fly. Maybe us SAs can coordinate flights and cars as it is always better to fly mid-week. Any further coordinating of SA flights I will do with them, but I thought others might find this process interesting....it is great to fly for free or almost free, but it does have its challenges.

Posted December 18th, 2012 - 2:38 am by from Rio Rancho, United States (Permalink)
Sanda, I can always go into IAH a day early then have the 3 flights from there to SJO the following day. I do that a lot since getting out of ABQ is sometimes a challenge. Good idea to coordinate flights between the 3 of us UA non-revs.

Ken, I do not drive outside the U.S. Have had international driver's license in the past and never use it. Don't even like to drive around here, was in an accident last month, the gal pulled out of a side street and hit me. Totaled my car, now even less inclined to drive. So, I'd be happy to take you up on your offer to taxi us around. Would share in the car expenses.

I'm really excited about this, think it will be a great adventure.

I am getting excited about this too! It will be bunches of fun. I can get to IAH (Dulles, near Washington DC) and we can go from there. And again, I will be happy to drive.

So...

Steve Brown
Ken Ferris
Aarnexia
Kiki
Virginia Hoffman
Sanda Everette

If we have many more people, we'll start beating the bushes for couches. One couple also accepted earlier, but I'm waiting to post their names. That fills known beds in my houses. I do have a two person tent. I can also put extra mattresses here and there...depends on people's tolerance.

Thanks guys, for fixing my ways with the IAD/IAH fiasco. I promise that in spite of that you won't have to talk extra slow for me to understand you.

It's good to see you got a ticket Steve. With some money spent it kind of makes it seem more like a done deal now and not just talk.

Hi Sharon, I'm on the list above but not on the newest list. I do still plan to come.

Thanks,

Correct me if this is wrong, or write to add information:

YES:

Betsy (doesn't need a couch)

Steve (needs couch) maybe staying for 3 days?

Ronit (needs couch)

Virginia (needs couch) might arrive earlier?

Sanda and Brian (need couch)

Ken (needs couch

Aarnexia (needs couch)

Kiki (needs couch)

Linda (needs couch)

Mauricio (joined, but lives nearby...?)

Sharon H (local)

So who have I left out? Any dropouts? I haven't heard from any local host possibilities yet, but I'll be on the lookout. Anyone need a couch and able to sleep in a tent? We do have a 2 person tent with a good double mattress. Now, 10 years ago we all could have done it:) I'll be trying to accommodate people starting with the earliest confirmations, which were Ken and Steve, then Aarnexia and the mysterious Kiki (still unheard from). Also Virginia, Sanda, and Brian. Then everyone is kind of bunched up. Linda, Ronit, and who else? Mary Ann and friend? Mary B?

We'll be missing Marilyn, Sheila and Schon, Lynda, Kathie, Melita, and a few more...hope they can make it another time.

I have a Really Good Deal from my friend Alfie (mentioned earlier) for anyone wanting a few days in San Jose. His hotel, Casa Alfi, is wonderfully located in the center of San Jose, and he's offered a discount on rooms to anyone attending this meeting. I'm hoping to lure him out to the finca for a visit while everyone is there. He's got some good stories and a good place to stay. His website: http://www.casaalfihotel.com/

Get back to me with corrections...I know I've misplaced a few people, but don't know if it's because they won't be joining us. And please try to give me your best estimate of which days you'll be staying on the finca..or which nights. I expect to be able to find couches for everyone, but will need some local CS help.

Sharon

Thanks Sarah, for all your work here. I can see it is a lot of effort even before we all trek in. Again, I am really looking forward to this event. I have couchsurfed quite a bit but I have never attended a couchsurfing event like this. I don't know quite what to expect. As I mentioned before I am willing, able and even anxious to drive folks around. I can't cook to save my soul but I make a mean PBJ and, if pressed, I can boil water. I can and will sleep anywhere, including a tent or in the hallway if it will help. If there is a way I can help before the event, please let me know and thanks again!

I'll be posting an update on the activities site (https://www.couchsurfing.org/activity/view/K4MWOU/pura-vida), if you'll go there and look, and sign up, if you haven't already.

Thanks, Frank and Jude, for letting me know of your housing status, and sorry that Kathie (HASTOBEKATT) can't join us.

@Ken...your offers of help are more than welcome. I think that we have more than enough cooks and can use you in other capacities:)

One reason for asking for updates is that people are emailing me on and from several lists/accounts, and I'm trying to herd everyone to the activity list for posting information on attendees and couch needs. If anyone is finding local couches not on our farm, please let me know!

So go take a look at the activity age and see if your own status needs updating. If you cannot attend, please let me know.

Pura vida!

Hi all,
Yes I'm in, just booked my flights, so its a definate! Think I got a good price using British Airways and American for £600 ($1000) return. [LHR-MIA-SJO-DFW-LHR]
So will be arriving in SJO late on 26th Feb and leaving on 21st March. Initial thoughts are to stay in San Jose city for a couuple of nights then head out to the finca to meet up with all of you's.
No further plans at the moment but would like to see as much of the country as possible. Perhaps hook up with someone and share car hire costs visiting other CS hosts or staying in hostels?? I'm sure that will all evolve nearer the time.

Now got to get back to organising my CS Christmas party here in Merrie England!

Compliments of the season to all

Steve

Seeing what Steve wrote, made me decide to send what I was thinking about yesterday. I had no idea someone would be coming all the way from England....but no matter where you are coming rom this is a fairly long trip to go to Costa Rica. I was thinking it would be good to stay longer than a week; it is such a beautiful country and it has been 15 years since I was last there.

I am almost embarrassed when I tell people that I foolishly own time shares, yes plural. (I actually prefer couchsurfing.) I was thinking I could reserve a time share on the beach if available for the following week. Would anyone be interested? If there were six of us in a 2BR condo, the cost would be about $200 each for the week....that would be the week of March 8 or 9.....condos start on a Friday or Saturday. If a few people were interested, I could also post it in the 50+ and 60+ groups. I did that in Cancun for October, though unfortunately only one CSer was able to take me up on it, but I know she had a great time. I promoted that only a couple of weeks before we went.

Well, it is still Christmas here for another hour and a half or so, so I just wanted to say "Merry Christmas" to those who read this thread. I'm looking forward to meeting many of you in about two months!

Belated Happy Holidays from here as well. We had three feasts within 24 hours, as our son was born on Dec 24 and that birthday was celebrated first, and with food:)

Anyone who can track down the Activity notice I posted is welcome to provide feedback.

Merry Christmas to all from England and my Couchsurfing Christmas party.
I have 5 Couchsurfing guests staying. [ 2 German, 1 Italian, 1 Indian and 1 Vietnamese]. We have all survived the hectic Christmas day, my planning and cooking all went perfectly! Today it is the turn of my guests to have control over the kitchen, we started with Indian eggs for breakfast. Went to see a traditional local fox hunting meet then a local pub and back for more food. A vietnamese starter followed by an Italian risotto. Various cocktails mixed by my German guests and soon more Indian food. Obviously washed down with mucho vino!

Happy New Year!

Steve
