Sat 12th Jan - Out and about
Posted January 7th, 2013 - 11:47 am by from Outlying Islands, China (Permalink)
I'm going to go to Tung Lung Chau (East Dragon Island) this Saturday. I've been four or five times before and like the place. Especially for visitors to the city this is a great opportunity to visit somewhere off the beaten track and to see the natural side of Hong Kong.

Details: Meet at Sai Wan Ho MTR station at 10:00-10:10 on Sat 12th Jan. Walk five minutes to the ferry dock and take the ferry (30HKD return) 30 minute ferry ride east of Hong Kong Island come to Tung Lung Chau. Do a three-hour hike (most of it on well-maintained path but a small section is slippy and steep so wear decent shoes). See some views of Hong Kong Island from afar, ancient rock carvings, a beach, a pre-colonial fort and beautiful nature. Depending on the speed of the group there may be time to descend to an impressive sea arch. Bring a picnic for yourself. There are a couple of local places to get food and drinks on the island, but better to bring your own food. Take the 3:30pm ferry back to Sai Wan Ho. Arrive back at Sai Wan Ho MTR aound 4:05pm.

If you think you can make it please say so here and I will look out for you between 10:00 and 10:10am at Exit A (ground level).

Hi Ian

I would love to join you, and any others on the hike.
Hopefully I will make it there by 10:00, but it's less than 48 hours after I arrive in HK, so I'm not sure about the times differences ans such.

See you there!
Ps I'm the 6 foot short haired guy.

It's 18 minutes on the MTR from Central to Sai Wan Ho, and 22 minutes from Tsim Sha Tsui - but don't forget to add on 5 minutes each end to get into and out of each station.

See you all tomorrow - at 10:00am-10:10am at Sai Wan Ho MTR Exit A (ground level).

If you're any later than 10:10am we will have gone to catch the ferry. The ferry won't wait so neither will we. If for whatever reason you are later than 10:10am then it's bad luck for you, we will have gone and you will have to think of a plan B for the day.

Bring:

1)Good shoes for walking - shoes with grip for a tricky descent. If you like using a hiking stick it's worth bringing too. You won't use it most of the day but you will be glad of it on the descent.
2) Picnic lunch for yourself
3) 30 HKD for the ferry in cash (I think this is the price, but I haven't been for a few months so I might be a little bit out). They do not take the octopus card on this ferry.
4) Wear clothes suitable for being outside all day. It is forecast to be 13-18 degrees and cloudy.
