Learn / play Chinese chess and mahjong
Posted January 19th, 2013 - 11:09 am by from Hong Kong Island, China (Permalink)
Hello,

I'm living in Kennedy Town and I would like to learn how to play mahjong and Chinese Chess. I'm tired to only play Texas Holdem. hehehe. I have a game of each (but just a crappy travelling one). I try to learnt it before, but majhong is too complicate, I need more practice and someone with the patience to teach me.

Then, we can organize some gathering sometimes to play it after a dinner. What do you think?

Fred :)

Though I'm a local, I'm not really good at playing mahjong, it would be great for me to learn with other beginners. Count me in if there's any activities. :)

Great to see many people interested into it! Now, I think we will have to organize and separate into different group. Like one chess, two mahjong, one poker groups... We can still meet at the same time/place and make rotation. But we have to find a place big enough to host us and convenient for all to reach. A restaurant would be cool. Any idea?

However, for this week I think I cannot organize it. I'm too busy with my work and personal stuff. So maybe we can start to think about it carefully and check for next week hopefully.

i can teach you basic mahjong there would be lot fun, and i wanna learn how to play chinese chess

Posted January 24th, 2013 - 2:37 am by from Versailles, France (Permalink)
I think the idea of organizing several groups is very good but we are numerous so a restaurant sounds kind of small. Moreover is not very convinient since we will have to eat at the same time.
I think playing in a parc, Kowloon one for example, would be great: no limit of space, extensible, free...but it all depends on the weather...
What about this week-end?

Posted January 24th, 2013 - 4:14 am by from Hong Kong Island, China (Permalink)
Indeed, the park is a nice idea! And we can still bring snacks and drink. Have to find a nice spot with tables. We can ever change park each time to discover different places! :) But for this weekend, as I mentioned i,m already fully booked... Have to wait next week for me.. but nothing forbid you to gather this weekend if you want!.

Yes, restaurant was my first thought too, but as someone mentioned we have to consider that we are going to be a bunch of people. So we have to find a "good" restaurant is quite empty and try to make a deal with the owner. He let us play and in exchange we bring him so customers on regular basis for our game. It is legal is we don't bet money. And actually, it's what we do with my friend sometimes when we want to play poker. Otherwise, I think the park can still be a good idea. I'm not an expert but for majhong just a table should be enough, as we are not professional or gambler. And for the noise, it will be less problematic than indoor. Also, park are not supposed to be quite place! Anyway, I'm fine with both. So does anyone have suggestion for a restaurant if we have to do it indoor?

Mahjong??!!?! Did someone say mahjong??!?!?!?!

TOTALLY IN FOR IT. My spine just tingled when I saw the word 'mahjong'.

Not... that I know how to play the version of mahjong played here... but that's exactly it.

I miss mahjong so much, and really want to learn the version that's played here!

A mahjong picnic sounds great but I guess most chaps will be preparing for the marathon this weekend?

Great, What about Sunday afternoon/early evening? Earlier, people mentioned a park, but if it's too cold or rainy we can go to a restaurant (not free) also mentioned in previous message. I'm cool with both. But who've got a game to bring? I just have a really small one (travelling size...) of chess and mahjong.

So Sunday?

1.Fred

PS: Vivian, really? I didn't realized. Have to say I,m a bit tired and sick those days ^^

Posted February 21st, 2013 - 8:09 am by from Berkeley, United States (Permalink)
I learned how to play Mah Jong just this past week -- I need to practice so when I go back to Mainland I can win! :P Sunday afternoon would work well for me!

Posted February 21st, 2013 - 11:18 am by from Hong Kong Island, China (Permalink)
Damn the Athletic meet of my hall is on this Sunday it will last the whole day so I don't think I can make it :( I'm free on Saturday tho but if you guys can't guess I'll just pass this one!

And Fred, how nice of you to make up such excuse to try to make me feel better! if only If Will didn't overlook me the other day as well I might have believed in it, now I know it's just me having a really common face (and prob unimpressive personality too ouch :P)

Great, what do you think to gather at about 4pm? (or earlier, or later)

For the place we have to choose either going to a park or restaurant. If we are going to a park we have to consider a park where there is table to play... and if we have enough game set.

Otherwise, Rice Ng suggested in a previous mesage:

"[A] private rooms in chinese restaurants or mahjong clubs that offers tables and mahjong set. [...]
Here's a link of a mahjong club in English
http://www.kccity.com.hk/mahjong

I think it is around HKD100 a person including drinks and food for 4 to 6 hours. Is that fine?"

What do you think?

Ok so tomorrow (Sunday) at 5pm... which location is better for you?

136-142 Woosung Street, Jordon: 2736 7222
74 Sai Yee Street, Mong Kok: 2787 3838
1A-1L Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok: 3678 3368

Sorry I just saw this thread! Exciting!

Ok, so Rice and Hazel called them! (BIG thanks for them to help me to come through the language barrier! ^^) Seems that it's ok to walk in!

It's about 900-1000 for a room of 10 people, including food and drink for 5hours. Seems to be a perfect deal for me.

So let's meet up at 303 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai (3188 2200) at 5pm at the entrance on the street.

As we don't have a reservation, that would be great that people message me (6228 2424) I will add them to the what'sapp group. Then nobody get lost!

So see you there soon!
Fred :)

I'm really sorry, I was very excited about this activity but I could not imagine it could last that much. I have huge work for next week so I think I won't make it. Really sorry to say that that late but I just saw the last info few minutes ago.
Have a blast there ;).
