Organizing an HK explorating and photography group
Posted January 19th, 2013 - 11:30 am by from Hong Kong Island, China (Permalink)
Hi there,

I've been living in HK for a while now and every day I'm a more amazed (if it's possible to be more) by this incredible city! But I realized there is many small places within the city or hidden in the new territories where I've never been. Even my local friends sometimes haven't head about them. I'm passionate about the city and nature.

So I was wondering if any of you were interested to join me to organize excursions time to time (on regular base), most likely on Sunday. We would explore some hidden beautiful places in HK (Historical sites, some remote villages, traditional neighbourhoods or just farmland, islands, country park, etc.). What do you think?

Meanwhile, that could also be opportunity for those who want to do photography to gather. I love photography but I really need to improve my skills and learn about it. So, we could go all together to those places to take "interesting photos". We can help, teach and learn from each others, and exchange tip. (Well, in that case I will learn from you, hehehe). THen, finish the day with a drink or nice meal.

I think it's a nice way to gather, learn (photography) and explore HK in the same time. Who are interested in? :)

Fred

Hey Fred,

That's a great idea to do photography walk. I used to live in London and there are lots of meetups like this. Upon my return I want to explore my home town as much as I did there. When we travel we cherish every single detail of the place but we are habitual to get everything for granted at home. So...let's do it - A history and culture photography walk! What time you are thinking?

Cheers,
Kelly

That's a really lovely way to discover hidden beauties of a city. I do not know much about photography but have been considering learning more. That would be a great way to do it! I have been here for a few months only, and would certainly be interested to join such an exploration. Let me know! ^^

That's a great idea!
It's something you can do a evening/night or as an entire daytrip to somewhere exciting.

If you decide anything within the next week I would love to join, but my camera is acually at the Nikon service center.

But count me in anyway! I just need a time an a place.

Fred, this is indeed a very creative and best way to discover hidden places! I do this all the time when I'm traveling as the city tells you much more if you go away from the usual places.
I'm coming from Berlin to HK end of February for 2 month, I bring my Canon Digital SLR with me. Though I'm a film student I'm not a pro but I'm happy to show you what I know...
Let me know what Sunday you're heading out! From Sunday 24th of Feb. I'm in too!
Hope to see you all!

Wow, I didn't expect that so much people would be in! Thanks for your enthusiasm. The more we are the merrier! :)

Great! So let's try to organize something simple for this week. I'm sorry, I'm really busy at work this week so I can't really focus on this nor organizing a full long day (like early in the morning 'til late the night) of exploring. So, in a hurry I just suggest something easy and where I haven't been yet, and think, many of you might not have been either: Park Island or Ma Wan (馬灣).

What do you think about Sunday, afternoon? It's a very small place, so we can enjoy it in a short time. I believe it is relatively easy and quick to access from Central Ferry Piers (and maybe even from TST?). I don't know anything about it, but even without being a UNESCO site I think there is a cute little fisherman village, new development, Tsing-Ma and Kap Shui Mun Bridges, and it is between Hong Kong and Lantau so should have a niece view of the city!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lantau_Link

What do you think about this choice? We could join at about 1pm have a small lunch or quick drink to introduce and get to know each others. Then, we can start our photowalk. Finally, depending what time it ends we can have dinner together or a tea and debrief our day for improving the next walk!

My alternative proposition is a night city walk somewhere in HK Island or Kowloon.

My camera is working (Nikon D3000), but for now my phone is dead... I have to fix it. Also, even if I will be glad to welcome everyone, after we made our decision for this Sunday I propose to fix a limit or close the group! Because even if I don't want to reject anyone, such an event will be hard to control if we are too many. If we are like 30 people, it will be hard to organize AND it will be a cacophony to wait and please everyone will. What do you think is the best for the sake of everyone?

Thanks again for your enthusiasm, and let me know your answer.

Well, I think we keep it open to everyone for now, and just welcome them to join us. Want to welcome everyone without any burden. Then we will see who sign up. When it will start to be crazy or really full then we can close the group or organize it into two sub-group. Just keep it this way now.. Wait and see.

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your invitation, I certainly remember that I invited you to visit our island; Ma Wan, and it will be my pleasure to show you around. The Weather on this Sunday seems to be quite nice.

First comes first, the transportation information and time table is at link below, ferry from Central pier #2 and bus from Tsing Yi, Kwai Fong and Airport. Get off at the last stop then you can find Shell Plaza.

http://www.pitcl.com.hk/eng/html/index.asp

My subjustion is:

13:00 meet in front of Pacific coffee in Shell Plaza, have some sneck in coffee shop or get something to eat from Parkn Shop. ( See map at link below, the egg shape plaza. )

http://maps.google.com.tw/maps?q=ma+wan&hl=zh-TW&ie=UTF8&ll=22.3527,114.062784&spn=0.002957,0.004318&sll=23.63446,120.970459&sspn=5.996415,8.843994&brcurrent=3,0x0:0x0,0&hnear=%E9%A6%AC%E7%81%A3&t=h&z=18

14:00 island walk for 1 to 2 hours, you will see the hidden part of the island.

16:00 go to beach, relex and have some drink, you can have a close up of Tsing Ma Bridge from here.

18:00 dinner in seafood restaurant ( under HK$ 200 per head with drinks and maybe some wine ) please let me know if any one will stay for dinner, I need to make reservation before 20:30 today due to the restaurant is quite popular, so dinner registration will be closed at 20:00 today ( 25 Jan )

Please let me know if you need other information.

Ciao!
Justin.

Thanks Justin, as a local I,m sure your advice will be fully appreciate. However, I think I wont join for dinner. As I said, I'm really busy this weekend. On the other hand, if it came up that we end our tour at dinner time then maybe I will have dinner on Park Island. Then, if I'm not the only one in that case we will try to go to that restaurant you are recommending to us. Otherwise, I'm sure we can still find something else nice. The point is, I don't really want to impose a precise schedule. It is good to have it as reference. But we have to keep in mind that we are doing and exploration / photo walk. It might take longer or be shorter than we are planning. It is hard to tell. It is depend on everyone taking pictures, wanting to see that or this...

So at the end, we keep in mind the schedule you proposed. We will definitely meet at one for a snack / introduction / drink. We also can consider to leave at 2pm (but that's only for reference as well). After that we shouldn't worry about time. According to my experience, having a tight schedule can ruined such experience sometimes. End at the night, those who are sure to join you can book for the restaurant, and the other, well we will see what happen and what we can do. A bit like a small "backpacker" style adventure in HK! hehehe

I think it's best way to accommodate everyone without being stress by any factor. But thanks again for your help Justin. So will we count you in with us?

sorry everyone that I missed it... I thought I could made it but I was getting sicker and sicker lately. I think getting out for a drink those last days to meet other CS made the things worst. Sunday when I woke up I was really feeling bad. Sad and sorry that I have to ditched you at the last minute! I will probably organize an Exploring/photo walk to Park Island - version 2.0, for those who missed it. Because I really want to go there!

I hope you all enjoyed it! If I can have your feedback about the event that will be nice (what worked and what didn't? what did you like or not? were you too many, not enough, just ok? too long, too short? the meeting was too, early too late or good timing? Having a more precise plan or keep things flexible? etc.). That will help to improve the event. Then we can organize another exploration/photo walk for a next weekend! I already have ideas and suggestions for other places to explore. Are you interested in?

Dear me- just saw this post in my inbox! Sorry Frederic if my event contributed to you missing the event you set up? I can confirm everyone here that you did leave much earlier than the rest of us. It was merry night and dark so mixing drinks didn't help; I remember I even had a glass of JD with Cranberry juice ;p

hahah, no don't worry Kev, not fault of the event with you! I was just really sick (a bad cold) I spent Sunday at home and today at hospital! Well, I guess the alcohol kind of emphasized the sickness maybe! ^^ Would have been a little hangover I would had go there anywhere! ^^

I don't think I will be able to do it this weekend actually. Start to feel better but still a bit sick! I will also have to work as I'm leaving the 8th until the 16th for Philippines ( so I want to totally restored my health state for it).

SO let's say we do it for after the 16th.. I already have plenty of idea to suggest you later. For those who want to look at some place to think about it I suggest you to check discoverhongkong.com, the site of the MTR (tourism) they have a couple of nice suggestion. I am thinking for the next time about Tai O, on Lantau

Other than beautiful countryside, there're quite a lot of interesting alleys or street activities hidden in the urban context that I have recently discovered
would keep updated and hopeful can join the coming activity!

Hi, Fred,

Since you did not visit our island last time, I will have time on Sunday 3 Mar in the afternoon but it seems weather will be a bit chilly and have some rain. I will still be there for you if you are coming to Park Island.

There are ferry from Central pier #2 and bus from Tsing Yi MTR Exit C, Kwai Fong MTR Metroplaza and the Airport. Get off at the last stop bus terminal then you can ask for Shell Plaza. ( One minute walk ) If you are coming by ferry, then Shell Plaza is 2 ~ 3 minutes walk from Park Island Pier.

http://www.pitcl.com.hk/eng/html/index.asp

Same like the last time, 13:00 meet in front of Pacific coffee in Shell Plaza, have some sneck in coffee shop or get something to eat from Parkn Shop. ( See map at link below, the egg shape plaza. )

http://maps.google.com.tw/maps?q=ma+wan&hl=zh-TW&ie=UTF8&ll=22.3527,114.062784&spn=0.002957,0.004318&sll=23.63446,120.970459&sspn=5.996415,8.843994&brcurrent=3,0x0:0x0,0&hnear=%E9%A6%AC%E7%81%A3&t=h&z=18

14:00 island walk for 2 to 3 hours, you will see the hidden part of the island.

17:00 go to beach, relex and have some drink, you can have a close up of Tsing Ma Bridge from here.

After the trip, you can decide if you are staying for dinner or not.
Please let me know if you need other information.
