How much HKD we need for per day?

Dear all,

I have a query as I am visiting Hong Kong for 4 nights and 5 days, including a day trip to Macau. My hotel reservations are already done...

So those days how much HKD I should carry and a budget traveler should spend how much in a day? (Food+transportation+touristic attractions) excluding Disney land..as I am not visiting there...

Kindly tell me the amount...is HKD 400 is enough for a day for a budget traveler(excluding accommodation)?

Hi Kaustav,

It really depends what you do and where you wanna eat right? On the budget end, there are local restaurants (Cha Chan Ten) for eating a breakfast pasta and BBQ Pork lunch box for under HK$35, local Chinese dinners is like under HK$60 so it's possible to do 3 meals in HK$200 per day.

Most tourist attractions can be taken by mtr but you better research where you want to visit (http://www.discoverhongkong.com/login.html#) and find the closest mtr station, here are your payment options that you can plan ;) http://www.mtr.com.hk/eng/fares_tickets/index.html

Unless you use the mtr many times in a day otherwise do not expect to use more than HK$50.

Hope this helps!

Dear Kev,

Thank you so much for such a wonderful information. Can you tell me about the Octopus Card? Is it really a good deal to take one while travelling in Hong Kong?

Hi Kaustav,

The Octopus card allows you to quickly check in at the MTR as well as make small payments in a number of stores / facilities.

The price difference between buying a separate MTR ticket every time or using the Octopus card is not considerable. However, the Octopus card is very convenient as you don't have to bother looking for tickets anymore.

All the best!
