Cross Canada Run: Shattering the Stigma around Mental Illness
Posted February 9th, 2009 - 10:50 pm by from Salt Spring Island, Canada (Permalink)
Hello fellow couchsurfers!

Have you heard about Wayne Cho and his Cross Canada Run to raise awareness and help breakdown the stigma that revolves around mental illnesses? Check it out: www.crosscanadarun.com/. He also happens to be a couchsurfer and I am helping organize his project westbound from northern Ontario. Wayne began his running tour in May 2008 and ran 60% of the country bringing him to Thunder Bay, Ontario on New Years Eve. An ankle injury forced him to stop and he’s been healing over the last month. Now its time to hit the road again! And he needs support and help from couchsurfers across our great nation.

How can you help? What skills and passions do you possess? While the Couchsurfing motto reads, “participate in creating a better world, one couch at a time”, Cross Canada Run has a similar vision: "shattering the stigma around mental illness: one voice at a time". And we want your voice! Perhaps you can offer us a couch or help organize a fundraiser in your town to help Wayne achieve his goal to run across Canada. Maybe you can connect us with fellow runners, mental health organizations, or community centers. We want to get the word out to as many people as possible and couchsurfing is going to help us find nationwide connections.

Other ways you can help: connect us with media in your hometown for newspaper, radio or television broadcasts so that we can get the message across to the public, find a physio or massage therapist who can donate a free session of athletic therapy, donate a small sum to support the cause, join us on the road, or simply come talk with us. The sky’s the limit!

Wayne wants to run across the country to talk to people who are currently battling anxiety and depression and share their stories. He wants to let people know that these illnesses can affect anyone (1 in 5 Canadians!). Ultimately, we want the average person to know about anxiety and depression like they know about the common flu.

The Cross Canada Run project takes mental health awareness on the road and, with one foot in front of the other, it gathers inspiration so that, one voice at a time, we can change the way Canadians view mental illness.

You can find Wayne’s CS profile here: www.couchsurfing.com/profile.html?id=6V0UT5A

and the project's cs sub-group:

you can contact either of us if you want to know more, get involved or meet up as we make our way across Canada.

coming to a couch near you,

Michelle and Wayne
