Volunteering Stories?
Posted July 27th, 2008 - 3:00 am by from Vancouver, Canada (Permalink)
I signed up to be a volunteer earlier this year. A few weeks ago I received a preliminary phone call from what sounded like a summer student. She asked me a number of boiler plate questions and said they'd be in contact if they were interested.

Then I received an e-mail to sign up for an interview but it was a false alarm.

I must say that I'm deeply UNimpressed with what has happened so far. Not only do the organizers seem uninterested in tapping into the wide set of skills and experience of me and others, but they seem exceedingly disorganized. This skepticism was confirmed by a lawyer-friend of mine who is involved at a fairly high level. She feels the top-level management is superb but has significant questions about the volunteer program.

One thing's for sure: I'm not going to stand around for 8 hours at a time in -10C weather, helping to park $80K+ cars of the creme de la creme!

What's up, Robert?

Dude, don't worry! Everything is gonna be alright!

I'm also a volunteer for the Vancouver Games, and I got the call a few days ago too. But first they sent me a couple of emails confirming what time should they call me.
The phone interview was just like the one I had for the Torino Games, 4 years ago. But the italians didn't tell me before they were going to call me. That was in June 12th 2005, and I only got a formal invitation to work in the 2006 games in November. That was all new to me, so I thought it was awesome anyway.

But now the canadians already called me, sent me an email telling me when I should be there, where Im going to work (NOC Assistant), and that my training will take place before Jan 24th 2009.

So, as far as now, the canadians are beating the italians by 10x0.

Again, don't worry! Those are gonna be great Winter Olympics!

My only fear now is not being able to find a place to stay during the games, once I'll be there from mid January till March 1st.

Im already thinking of making a group of volunteers interested in renting an apartment in Vancouver, in order to make costs cheaper to everybody.

What do you think?

Cheers from Brazil!

Everything changed today for me. Though they let me know 6 weeks later than they said they would, I've been offered a position to volunteer at Press Operations. A good job, which I'm superbly suited for! Now I have a solid reason to stay in my own city during the Olympics.

Yoo Hoo!!!
