Homemade Library! Printing & Binding workshops...
Posted March 7th, 2013 - 10:29 am by from Berlin, Germany (Permalink)
I've got an idea about a project I'd like to perform and I'm looking for a space to do it, and people who would like to help or get involved. The idea is to print books ourselves, binding them and make out of them a library. That way the system of the library could be something like:

1. You go to the binding workshop where you learn:

- Lay out
- Printing
- Binding

2. The idea is to have a copy in the library of every book we make in the binding workshop. So, with the books of the library you can:

- Just leave the book in the library, where you can borrow it any time you want.

- Have the book for personal use. Then you pay something symbolic, for the cost of the materials we spent on the making, that way we can make a new copy.
Otherwise you make yourself the same book at the binding workshop and you leave that one in the library.

* To that can be add other workshops such as "illustration and covers design" or "recycled paper".

The idea is, with some time and hopefully with the participation of the people, to make an open library with many languages and subjects. I know by experience that is not easy to find books in other languages here in Berlin, and people might appreciate that. I hope, you like the idea. Specially I'm looking for someone who is interested and can help me with the printing (pdf, word, indesign...)
Any tips and suggestions are very welcome! :)

Hi Rozalka!

I'm glad to hear that! For the moment it is just a pilot project, I'm just launching the idea, and I'm more worried about finding someone who likes it and can help me and maybe get involved with the organization at the beginning. I am specially interested on knowing:

- How to print the books with the proper size and booklet format, and make them ready to bind. I tried it thousands times and I still didn't figure out. (pdf, word, indesign...) it should be a way but my problem is that the text is always to small to read it. I don't know if that's problem of my printer or is just something that I didn't find.

- New binding techniques. I know some of them but the idea is that I won't be a workshop master, I'd like just to find people interested on the project. We will share knowledge with everyone and try out together new ways.

I hope you understood better the idea I have. I think the place won't be so hard to find. If you think that's ok maybe we can meet with all the poeple who is interested on the project and make brainstorming to start working on it! Hope to hear from you soon!
