buying a car or scooter and sharing accommodation
Posted January 20th, 2013 - 11:57 am by from Gold Coast, Australia (Permalink)
Hi - please can anyone tell me how we can find a reasonably cheap car to either rent for 6 months or to buy - or a scooter. I am trying to find information for my brother who is coming to Mauritius next month for work experience - does anyone know of student shared accommodation or anyone have a room to rent. He will be working in Floreal - Someone has offered him to rent in Port Chambly - any comments on living there and trying to get to work in Floreal - thank you

I think renting is best solution but rent a car when you come in Mauritius, prices that you can find on internet is very high. A lot of locals are renting their privat cars and you can negotiate good price.

For 15 days I pay 1000RS/day, for 6 month you can get much better price.

Wow - all useful information - thank you everyone - We think he will arrive middle of February - dont think his company has a shuttle as they have asked him what is he going to do about transport. They have also asked him what money does he want to earn - gosh have no idea at all - any hints as to what a 23 year old would need monthly to survive? Will need internet so if you can give us some ideas as to cost of living and internet - we last lived there 12 years ago and that was with the parents - so have no idea - thanks again for all your help

Thanks Gio, besides McDonalds :) how much is standard food for the month and water and electricity.

He is going to be working for an Architect firm as he has just finished his degree and will be doing an internship or paid work experience - initially only staying for 6 months but would like to be 10 months - he would probably like to rent a car if only on the weekends.

This is great information - you are such a great help thank you :)

Hi Kirsty,

I think in terms of salary, for internship in architecture field, it is safe to ask for a range Rs 18 000 to Rs 20 000. I have a friend who came from france and doing an internship at our agency. Then you can re-negotiate working terms and conditions and salary after 6 month or a year, depending on your employer.

For utility bills and food, i think Rs 5000 maximum. Maybe even less. Some places, the utility bills are inclusive, so it gets even less. However, it you eat out everyday, then it can get expensive. Well, that's the case for any country really. Home prepared meals are much cheaper than buying outside.

Hope this helps

Cheers
Avi
