New Header for New Problems
Posted March 15th, 2013 - 4:02 pm by from Paris, France (Permalink)
You have got to give it to the CS A-team: They sure know how to create problems where they were missing instead of solving those they have already created following that same strategy.

Couchsurfing's very own CEO Tony Espinoza, in a post from his very own (though hidden) profile, in the Ambassadors' Public-then private-for-now-public-again group, in Direct Discussion! reveiled an amazing scoop:

"We are adding a new photo collage to the Place Pages tomorrow. If you want to view it just add "?new_header=true" to the end of your local Place Page URL.

For example:

There are 10 different pre-built collages per Place Page. All users can opt out of being included by selecting the "Never show my profile photo here" checkbox under the link "Who are these faces" in the lower left. All existing privacy settings are also respected by this feature."

This beautiful collage is sure to delight users of Netbooks and mobile devices, where it optimizes load times and screen space.

Tony, be welcome to Couchsurfing and to launching more of these exciting ideas and services! You are on the right track doing your own thing rather than listen to those oldtimers hung up on legacy Fenton code and who are nothing but trouble and safety risks. Your work is so much cooler - the college kids will love it! I say ZERO TOLERANCE or attention for any idea or comment not coming out of the San Francisco Bay Area. Continue to show them that you are so much smarter.

Nevertheless, will it be possible to opt out of this? E.g. as a paid premium service?

"paid premium service"

Uli, you might want to think twice about getting that Platinum Couch Membership Card.

I hear that a campaign called "No Couches for Premium Members" is already being planned, ready to be launched as soon as the eSpin Spinola Card goes live.

Imagine if paying for premium service meant you had to go off Couchsurfing to be welcome any place.

"Platinum Couch Membership Card"

Premium Membership and Direct Marketing are the only two strategies mentioned by CS management so far to earn their salaries and then some extra cash for the shareholders.

So premium membership is the only way to avoid spam. They need to compensate for the estimated 20% drop in verification revenue since they became "socially responsible", so we should all get one of these cards.

The way it will work is that either these premium members just host each other, or they pay a premium price for being hosted by hosts who cannot afford a premium membership fee or to host for free. Since management does not believe in the words "couch" and "surf", the card will more likely be named something like "Awesome Travel Card To Exciting Places".

I wonder what will happen when several people travel together. Do they all need their card? Will there be "Partner Cards" and "Familiy Cards", with a discount?

Exciting questions for Direct Discussion with the CEO.

My inside informant tells me they are considering launching the "We're Really Excited Key Card" in time for the summer rush.

Okay, so Colleen Sollars just convinced me that paid services aren't such a good idea after all:

"Because Couchsurfing is a free service and members do not have the ability to have financial transactions with each other through the site, it cuts down on scams seen on sites like craigslist or sites where connected people exchange money, goods or services, Sollars said."
