YOU’RE U.S. PROJECT LAUNCH
San Francisco, CA – (March 26, 2011)
On Saturday, April 9th, 2011, the organization You’re U.S. (http://youreus.com/) will celebrate the launch of their five year artistic and documentary campaign to capture the stories and images of 150 unique individuals across America. In the spirit of legendary American documentary artists Studs Turkel and Walker Evans, You’re U.S. will capture a cobbled portrait of contemporary America. April 9th kicks off the tour with a fundraiser and celebration of local music, film, art, and drink.
Director of You’re U.S. Emile B. Klein, will travel throughout the fifty states by bicycle, acting as a literal “artist in residence.” Klein, a European-trained classical painter, will paint the portraits of 150 individuals across the nation in exchange for their time and life stories . You’re U.S. will depict unique American characters while searching for our unifying traits.
You’re U.S. seeks to bring diverse individuals together by engaging a wide network of collaborators including, volunteers, craftsmen, and students. Their goal is to collectively find and portray a diverse group of 150 Americans.
Each month a new set of American lives will be presented online— recorded in paint, prose, and spoken word. Annually the three-part profiles will be collected for a traveling national exhibition.
The project You’re U.S. has already garnered support and participation from respected author and publisher Dave Eggers, NPR-featured storyteller Joel Ben Izzy, and painter Graydon Parrish.
The April 9th event celebrates the project’s first leg from Florida to Delaware, and launches You’re US’s fundraising efforts with the New York Foundation for the Arts (¬¬Artspire.com) and Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/).
You’re US’s kickoff event will be on Saturday, April 9th at Twin Space Continuum (2111 Mission Street, San Francisco) from 6 to 9pm. The event is free with invitation or $10 donation, and will feature quality food and drink from the Phoenix Pastaficio and Chris Lee of Pop Up General Store, among others. A range of Klein’s portraits will be available for sale starting at $5-$10,000. Guests will be able to make tax-deductible donations at the event through artspire.org. The event is expecting over 200 people and will include film and music.
