Looking for a place to stay Geelong area beginning of 2011
Posted November 4th, 2010 - 12:38 pm by from Melbourne, Australia (Permalink)
Hello everybody,

I will start working in Geelong from the beginning of next year (probably arriving in January depending on my visa procedure), and I am looking for an accomodation. Either in Geelong or surroundings or in a part of Melbourne with good public transport connection to Geelong.
Temporary options for a few months are welcome as well.

I am interested in house sharing as well as in a small studio on my own, furnished or unfurnished. I have a lot of experience with flat sharing, so I think I am an easy going and reliable housemate/tennant. If you need any more info just contact me.
I would be happy about any hint!

Hi Astrid, did you get any replies about living in Geelong? I moved here 10 months ago to take a job working at Deakin Uni. Finding housing was really difficult. Real estate agents don't seem to care to be helpful to renters. You might have some luck finding a flatshare on the easyroommate website (http://au.easyroommate.com/). I found my house share by posting a note at the climbing gym, so my best suggestion is to get connected to a community fast because word of mouth is going to be your best bet.

Commuting from Melbourne to Geelong is possible but not ideal. The train between downtown MEL and Geelong city centre takes 50-60 mins. Add on time to and from the train stations and you have a pretty long commute.

If you are willing to commute by bike or car, you might have better luck looking for housing in one of the communities to the south of Geelong. Torquay is 20km from the city centre, and Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Jan Jac, and Anglesea are just a few km further. Plus they are all beautiful beach towns so you will feel like you are on vacation every day :)

Good luck!
