Hello from Detroit*!
On behalf of our awesome local CouchSurfing communities, I want to extend you a warm welcome to the 1st Annual Detroit Couch Crash. Yep, we're organized, ready and excited to put on a big regional event, following in the footsteps of trailblazing CS communities such as New York, Pittsburgh and Melbourne, Australia.
Our event is four days long, over Memorial Day weekend and concurrent with the internationally famous Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Hundreds of thousands of people will be in the area from out of town (and country!) for this, not to mention hundreds of CouchSurfers. It's the perfect time to show the world how amazing Detroit really is and just how friendly and welcoming its people are. Contrary to what you may have heard about Detroit, it's truly a gem concealed by a bad and outdated reputation (present economic crisis aside - ahem ;] ).

We're working tirelessly on the schedule of events (there are just WAY too many "must sees and dos" to fit into one weekend!), but some likely highlights include:
Culture / History
- Historic Greenfield Village, Historic Fort Wayne, Ford Rouge Factory Tour, Detroit Historical Museum, Arab American Museum, African American Museum
- The Heidelberg Project, art gallery crawl, Detroit Institute of Arts
Nature / Outdoors
- bike tour, picnic
- urban spelunking, freeganism, graffiti tour
- A big mixer Friday evening, Detroit Electronic Music Festival, pub crawl, Free Hugs, DEMF after parties Saturday - Monday
If that weren't over the top enough, the Detroit Couch Crash is partnered with another Great Lakes regional CouchSurfing event, this one centered on St. Catharines, Ontario (near Niagara Falls), happening the weekend prior, May 15th - 17th. We set up a Couch Crawl between our two events to link them and encourage you to attend both. What this means is that cities between St. Catharines and Detroit are encouraged to put on small but fun Couch Crawl meet-ups/events during the week between the two regional events so people traveling between the two can "Crawl" from couch to couch. Pretty cool, eh? Check out this Google Map of both the north and south of Lake Erie route options: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Saint+Catharines,+ON,+Canada&daddr=Hamilton,+ON+to:Toronto,+ON+to:Guelph,+ON+to:Kitchener-Waterloo,+ON+to:London,+ON+to:Windsor,+ON+to:Toledo,+OH+to:Cleveland,+OH+to:Akron,+OH+to:Erie,+PA+to:Buffalo,+NY+to:Saint+Catharines,+ON,+Canada&geocode=&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=42.366662,-81.188965&sspn=3.701345,8.031006&ie=UTF8&z=7

*And by Detroit, I mean Southeast Michigan (Ann Arbor, etc.), Northwestern Ohio (Toledo, etc.) and Southwestern Ontario, Canada (Windsor, etc.). This is a fully regional CS event - it's just that Detroit is the biggest in population and name recognition and as such forms the nucleus.
