One more way to go to Africa

The world needs teachers.

You might be interested in becoming one of them?

DNS is a necessary education for a rapid changing world, preparing you for leading people into the future, a radical program that puts traditional education on its head. It was founded in Denmark in 1972 and since then has been answering to the world changes by modernizing the curriculum and program every time that there is a need, in order to prepare better the ones who will guide the next generations. In 2011 we started a brand new program at DNS in cooperation with One World University – OWU – in Mozambique.

We are reviving some of the original ideas in the DNS program like going for a 4 months study travel by own buses and we have modernised the curriculum and the program so it fits to our modern international world. We are in the middle of all this, so the ones who have decided to start in 2011 are part of this interesting process.

DNS offers a lifestyle and a learning process driven and nurtured by the group – the team of DNS-students and their teachers – the common ground they build together, the decisions they make together and the big results which stem from their midst.

You are hereby invited to join in.

The Idea

The DNS program is made for you to become a person in your own right. A human being – not defined by your job or your salary, but by your humanity and personal values and skills, your ability to live and work together with others, and to bring changes and new and better conditions.

DNS educates you as a teacher. In your future work you will enable your students to understand the many phenomena of the world, you will teach them a big amount of knowledge and you will share a lot of your own experiences and attitudes with them.

A teacher plays an important role in society – especially in a society where more and more people – parents and children – get marginalized, discriminated and become poor – not only in material things, but indeed in lack of proper care and attention in school and lack of opportunities. For all students – rich or poor – the big task for the teacher is to prevent alienation and create a human culture building bridges between all kinds of people.

We know that you cannot do it alone. You need cooperation with your friends and team mates and guidance from your teachers. You will need a busy program to challenge you, and make you do much more than you thought possible.

A program that needs to be conquered – by you !

Bachelor in „Pedagogy“

Bringing up and instructing children and youth to learn the skills and acquire the knowledge and wisdom they need to carry the future of humanity, is no small task.

It is necessary that their teachers get a big variety of personal experiences.

They must experience people’s life in the poor parts of the world in the villages as well as in the cities, for the poor ones who struggle for survival, as well as for the rich ones, and for the growing middleclass who struggle to create themselves a place in the modern world.

They must experience their own society and the life for the many different people living here under very different conditions – or in this context the European societies. How are all the different people living here, coping with financial crisis, obesity and loneliness?

How is the life for the parents of the children the teacher will meet in the school? How are the lives for the different social groups we find in the European setting? For the immigrants? For the working people? For the well offs? What do the people aspire for the life for their children? What are the hopes and dreams of the future?

They must know about the children and their world.

They must make educational investigations in the communities, they must study about sociology of the child, groups and institutions, about philosophy of educations and about psychology and development of education, sociolinguistics and methods of teaching for basic education, methods and means of teaching and learning as well as planning, coordination and administration.

Below you can see the outline of the education. Completing all the periods and subjects lead to a Bachelor Degree in Pedagogy. Each year has its curricular subjects as well as elements we have decided to train you in as well.

1. Year – The International Practice Field includes 2 months in Denmark preparing for a 4-month bus travel; 4 months bus travel through the Sahara desert and 3 months of elaboration and information work for people in Europe.

2. Year – The European Practice Field includes 6 months training in experiencing and understanding the national reality by seeking employment in factories and other workplaces. Living, studying, working and organizing cultural events in a bigger European city; 3 months studying at the school and 3 months doing what you find most appropriate to do.

3. Year – The School Practice Field includes 8 months training, working and understanding the reality of children and teachers by seeking employment in a European school; 4 months at the college studying and final exams.

Here some general information about the prerequisites needed to be part of DNS:

You should have 12 years of schooling. If you have less, it could be in some cases possible to get an exception, if you have been working for some time. Here we need to find out more details about your individual situation.

Our college can enroll students from EU countries and the teaching language is English. You don't need to be fluent in English, but able to communicate and study in English. The education leads to a Bachelor degree in Pedagogy.

Economy and Saving Up:

Within the 3-years education, there are working periods included in the program, where the students can earn their basic living expenses and school fees.

The expenses for the 1. Year have to be saved up before the program starts. It includes school fees, the basic living costs like food, accommodation, some pocket-money and the costs of the study travel to Africa. The amount is 7.000 €.

Some students can earn all the money in their home countries or somewhere else and just arrive when the program starts. Others earn at least part of the money by themselves and if they have no possibility of raising the full amount alone, they can apply for joining the so-called saving-up group, where they seek all kind of jobs together with their future teammates to raise the funds in a common effort.

The future DNSers work in all kind of simple jobs , in agriculture, building, cleaning, waiters, on cruise ships etc. individually or together with their team mates, some in their home countries, some in Germany, some in Denmark, some in other Scandinavian countries, where salaries are higher than in most other parts of Europe. It depends on each person’s experience level and skills.

If you need to join the saving-up group, it is very important to contact us in good time, so we can agree all details with you and you and the team can discuss about, how to find the jobs and make a saving-up plan together with you. As anywhere else it is not easy to get jobs, we are in a difficult financial crisis situation all over Europe, and we all have to put our forces together.

The official start of the program is 1. September

You can be next to join the team 2012 or 2013, it will not be easy, so much we can promise you, you have to be up for big challenges.
