North Drakensberg Traverse / Grand Traverse
Posted March 1st, 2013 - 11:47 am by from Rudolfstetten-Friedlisberg, Switzerland (Permalink)
Dear CS-ers!

I'll be in Durban between 11th and 14th May and before or after I would love to do the Drakensberg Traverse. I am still open for both options - 6 days and 2 weeks, depending on the budged and possibilities. Is there somebody who has been there already, knows the way and would go again? And do you know agencies who I could ask if they have hikes in smaller groups or so?

I will be very grateful for any information :)

Many thanks & all the best!

Hi Stela,

Unfortunately I cannot go as ill be in Europe when you're here.

I have done most of my hiking in this area and can give you the following important advice:

Do not trust the printed map's GPS co-ordinates. The last group I went with we had issues in the mist, and when we checked our maps (3 different versions, mine was the oldest) the GPS co-ordinates were out by about 70m-100m at least! Fortunately we could orient ourselves with the features and relate that to our position on the map,

Please also take care as the weather can turn rapidly, going from 30 Deg C in the day to -13 at night is not unheard of, and that is a large temperature drop.

Be very careful of hiking in poor visibility, as I'm sure you are aware, although I'm sure you'll fall in love with the Drakensberg.

Good luck.

Hi Stela, I have done almost 40 hikes up that escarpment. It is really great and in May it is still green. You must have experience of high altitude hiking and be able to navigate well.

Contact the MCSA KZN section for a possible leader and more info. http://cen.mcsa.org.za/

If I am in SA I can maybe attend it. Will let you know when I come back from the Himalaya at end of April.

Hello Diahann. That would be great!!
The thing is just, that something came in between and now I'm waiting for the answer - supposing I'll get it on Monday. Then I'll know if I can go or not and let you know.

Have a great weekend!
