A great day walk this Sunday?
Posted January 24th, 2013 - 2:20 am by from Auckland, New Zealand (Permalink)

We are thinking of going on a day trek this Sunday and looking for ideas of where to go on the North Island? We have done Tongariro, Pinnacles, Karangahape etc so looking for something else to tackle that's not to far from Tauranga. We would even consider staying in a hut overnight.

If anyone is interested in coming along, you are more than welcome :)

Hey Carol,
We haven't done any treks around here, I guess you're talking about 6hrs minimum walks.
But if you end up doing a short one then the Kohi Point walk from Whakatane to Ohope beach was really nice. It only takes 3h30 but you can extend by wandering around Ohope beach with little side tracks.

See ya :)

Thanks Francois. I know which one you mean - we done that one last year too....great walk though :) But yeah, 3hrs each way would be good....will take a look at that link and see if there's anything else. Cheers!

How about the track around Lake Okataina near Rotorua to Humphreys Bay? It is about 3 hours one way. Or the track past the Tarawera Falls to Lake Tarawera outlet (access from Kawerau).

There is always Mount Pirongia.

Its admitedly not the most exciting walk (aside from a few mandatory rocky bits, and an occasional rock climbing off-shoot), but there is a hut and a raised platform on top which can be cool during sunsets and sunrises.

Its also not far from the Kawhia hot water beach, if you are that way inclined.
