Photo essay in south india
Posted December 7th, 2012 - 6:03 am by from Gatineau, Canada (Permalink)
Hey there!

So, I was just made aware of this photo essay contest which I'd like to participate in, but have very little time for research as the due date is on January 14th.

I will be flying into south india (probably Chennai) in about 2 weeks. I need help and ideas for a quick, but effective photo story :)

One thing I did think about is the Kushti wrestlers. I'm under the impression Kolhapur is the place to go for this?

Can anyone confirm? Or would anyone have any good suggestions? As I said though, I wont have much time, so doing a story about street children or something would probably not work out! (you need real time for such a subject).

Other than the wretlers, is there any kind of interesting fishermans perhaps down south? Things like this :)

Any help and suggestions are much appreciated!! Thank you :)

Try Kalaripayattu:- Foundation of all the present styles of combat sports.

This should get your photo essay done in a very mesmerizing manner.

Wow! That's impressive!! I'll google some more, although I am not sure I will be properly equipped for such a subject matter. I'll need to get in close for that subject to be of great value I think.... having no big zoom (only 24-70 mm on a full frame), not sure I'll be able to get in close enough.... and I dont want me head cut off!!! lol

I'll dig more into it :)

If anyone else hass suggestions... please do share :)

Thx!! Pat

In that case I would suggest you do a photo essay on the exclusive group of female motobike riders of India called Bikerni.

You will get to have some really exclusive story to narrate with very little equipment.

Moreover they will be happy to help you out.

Hello Patrick,

Here are few ideas I can think of

1. Do a project of finding the remainng of ancient rulers / civilazations in Tamilnadu or just an area like Madurai

2. A photo project on the "navagraha temples" and the worshippers

3. Thiruvayyar - birth place of the musician Thyaga Raja swamikal

4. Tai Pusam http://tripsguru.com/FairsAndFestivals/Tai%20Pusam.html

5. Searching Gods - north Kerala (Kannur, Kasaragod and some parts of Kozhikode) will have Theyyam rituals all the time, unplan travel to kannur, find your way and document everything.

6. Harvest festival in Coorg : I don't have much information about this. But I think its arond this time of the year.

7. Buddist celeberations in Monasteries in KushalNagar - trying to find the details. I have a vauge memory that its sometime in Jan.

Few things I can think of ... hope this helps.

If it interest anyone, this is what I ended up submitting for my photo essay to WorldNomads. Perhaps not the best Kushti pictures out there, but really, it's to try and keep trying that's important right ;)

Thanks to all who sent in suggestions :)
