Hiring a driver...
Posted January 7th, 2013 - 5:29 am by from Sydney, Australia (Permalink)
Hi All,
Am looking to go to a few places (about 7 hours drive each) and am wondering if anyone has any ideas on the price of hiring a driver...whether it is charged per kilometre etc?? Whether I can hire one for 3 days or whether anyone can consider any contacts of drivers? Depending on price, it may be best that I take the same/one driver with me through India...rather than get a driver in each place.
All thoughts and recommendations appreciated.
HUGE Thanks,
Louise :)

It's not a good idea to get driver from Delhi but yes it's easy way to travel, are you coming JAIPUR too?

NightDawn, you are right ! The rates now are actually Rs 1200 for 80 kms/ 8 hrs... But I am sure she will exceed the kms and then she will be charged around rs 17-18 per kms. She cant keep the taxi overnight !

Cheers
Amit

If someone is ready to spend money then trying $99.99 per day is a very good bet,it includes all meals, travelling by AC car, staying in 3-star accomodation with dedicated guide from Airport pickup - Visit India - Airport drop.

I would suggest you are better off hiring a cab with a driver which ever city you go to, rather than have one driver .
The drivers would charge on a daily basis. The cabs on per/km basis.
Taking a public transport is safer, if you are in really small places/ or if you are doing a really long drive/night drive !

i think you need to disclose the names of the places you want to go so local people can advise you better. even if spending a lot of money might not be a issue for you, i wont recommend having one taxi driver for all the places.

have a happy journey

I went to Delhi last Christmas and we had a large Toyota Innova (7 seats), was really comfortable for the four of us.

All details below, driver was good and very safe, only be sure that all tolls, parking is included in price as that is the only issue we had when the driver (not the company) decided to add an extra bill and get multiple toll tickets but tried to make us pay for single ones.. (but even for this i would recommend)

This cost us

Innova (6 + 1 Seater) (6 DAYS 5 NIGHTS)

Total Kms Minimum Charged for 6 days 1200 x @ Rs. 13 = Rs. 15600

Driver Allowance Rs. 200 per day x 6 days = Rs.1200

Tolls & Parking = Rs.1200

State Tax UP = Rs. 500

State Tax Rajasthan: Rs.500

Total cost Using 1200 Kms = Rs. 19000 (After 1200 Kms Rs. 13 per Km will be charged extra )

Looking through these prices and I am realizing we got a very good deal! I traveled through Rajasthan last month and hired a driver in Pushkar. We went to Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and back to Pushkar in 8 days.

We had an indica (compact car) and it was 6.5 rupees/km with a minimum AVERAGE of 300km a day. So we could drive 600 one day and 0 the next, but still pay only for 600km. This saved us a lot of money. The driver's food, hotel, and the tolls were all included. So no extra charges.

6.5/km is dirt cheap!!

Amit, you should probably ask for that driver's number, nevertheless I will ask my dad today and give you the number of the 7/km guy.

Elise, do you have a contact number for this company, it'll be useful to have the number for future use.

ta,
Vani

Elise and Vani,

I notice that the min kms you mentioned is 300 kms per day. So perhaps, more the no of km, lesser the charge, and my initial info would be incorrect coz I was keeping into account 80 kms as the min distance. Still 6.5 or 7 are seriously dirt cheap !

Vani,

We got the driver in Pushkar at Hotel Diamond through the owner. I'm not sure if he was working with a company or not. But yes, definitely not a bad price!
