dear fellow c'surfers,
Let me tell u that currently there are no trains that connect srinagar to the rest of India due to the presence of huge mountains and tough terrain in between. though such project is under construction but will take a few more years. the best, fastest and least expensive way to travel to srinagar from kolkata is to take a fast train from kolkata to Delhi and from Delhi u can travel in a government bus of JKSRTC from a place called "tis hazari". it wil cost 1500 IRS ($26 US). and it is the safest way to travel to srinagar. the train travel from kolkata to Delhi would depend on the class of travel that you choose. well! don't worry about that coz its very cheap in India. and if it is your first visit to Kashmir, then u should travel by road atleast from jammu.
have a pleasant journey and a safe stay!

There are 2 direct trains from Kolkata to Jammu. From Jammu you will have to travel by road, bus or shared vehicles till Srinagar. It’s a long journey of around 40-45 hours but cheapest and easiest without hassles. Or you may take a train to New Delhi from Kolkata and take a connecting train from new Delhi to Jammu as suggested in this thread.

Cheers
