jazz Jam sessions?
Posted December 29th, 2011 - 5:01 pm by from Montreal, Canada (Permalink)

I traveling in NYC from December 30th to January something (4th) and I'd like to know if there are some jazz jam sessions I shouldn't miss and where can I find them :) Also if they have a cover charge or not. And if you know nice and rather cheap jazz places in NYC, please tell me!

I'm planning on going to the American Legion Post 398 for the Sunday jam session. Do you agree on that choice?

Thank you!

Hi Patricia! I played at that jam at American Legion 398 once. It was pretty nice! Lots of enthusiasm and very good players. I agree with your choice. But if it's on Sunday, remember that it's New Year's day and some places are closed. Worth while to call first.
When you come to NY, go into one of the jazz clubs in Greenwich Village and pick up a free copy of 'Hot House' magazine or NYC Jazz Record newspaper. They list all the clubs and who is playing every day and what time. That way you can see many more choices. If you can't get to Greenwich Village, you can get a copy at Michiko Studios, 2nd floor above Rosie O'Grady's restaurant/bar on 46th Street between Broadway and 6th Ave., north side of the street.
My favorite choice for cheap ways to spend a jazz evening is the Garage, on 7th Ave at Grove St. (Christopher St. or Sheridan Square stop on the 1 train). If you sit at a table and have dinner, it's kind of pricey, but sitting at the bar or standing near the bar, you can just have a drink or a soda or snack very cheap, and listen to different bands all night. I think the first band usually goes on at 6, but there's a fabulous big band there on Mondays at 7. In the same neighborhood on the other side of 7th Ave is Fat Cat, where you pay only $3 and get to hear different bands all night. And if you want to play pool or ping pong or chess you just pay by the hour and do that...it's a huge space with a lot of activity. Small's is only a block from there. It's $20 but that's all you have to spend. Arthur's Tavern usually has a swing/dixieland band on Monday nights, that's also a block away, and it's cheap. Be sure to pick up the magazines and write me again if you have more questions!!

Hi Carol,

Thank you so much for the quick and complete reply! I'll call American Legion 398 to know if they're opened today. And I'll definitely pick up the magazines :)

Sorry for the late answer!
We went to the sunday jam at American Legion 398 and we all really LOVED it. Amazing live music, I'm so happy we found it!

I also went to the Monday Big Band night at the Garage and to Smoke. It was all very entertaining and satisfying :) I can't wait to come back in NYC to go to Fat Cat and Small's.

Thank you so much for your help!
