Hi, we are visiting NYC (staying at Manhattan) in 4 weeks, could you please recommend us some good club or any other place where we could enjoy some good/typical american jazz?
Thanks,

Michal

Sure! Go online to www.hothousejazz.org. That is a magazine that lists all the clubs by the area of town and all the dates of who is playing there. Then if you have a price issue you can look further into each club and what the cover charge is. Many clubs have several shows per evening. My personal favorite hangs are the Garage on 7th Ave. near Christopher St. (sitting at the bar is much cheaper than a table), Arturo's on W. Houston St. (great Italian food and very nice little piano trios with much sitting in by other musicians) and Small's on W. 10th near 7th Ave. (first class shows, great jam sessions too, very reasonable and a really wonderful style of presenting). But there are so many more.
Hope you will catch some of my shows - go to http://sudhalter.com and see the Calendar. I have 3 nights at Metropolitan Room, one night at Somethin' Jazz, and one House Concert in a beautiful apartment in Harlem, all around Christmastime. Hope we meet. 917 667 5331 for any other questions.

Hey MIchal. It all depends on what you're looking for. There are a wide variety of jazz clubs where you can hear music from $3-$40

Smalls jazz club- you'll spend around $10 to enter

Village vanguard- around $30 with drink minimum

Birdland- Around $30 with drink minimum

In the end its all a matter of your preference and who you want to see...

ALso when you arrive, email me and maybe we can meet up. I am a jazz pianist.

Michal,

Whatever you do, don't neglect Harlem! This is where jazz was born after it migrated from the South. Two amazing places that made me cry with happiness are: The famous and historic Lenox Lounge on Lenox Ave - full of history and beauty, with fabulous little bands playing there most nights. Also, "Bill's Place", a terrific little speakeasy that operates on Friday nights - loads of fun and a hot band playing.

Google both and Enjoy!

To that last comment I would add SHowman's Lounge, a great organ club in the 300 block of 125th St., not far from the Apollo Theatre.

Howdy Carol,

Thanks for that. Wish I'd known about it when I was in NYC - feel so wistful looking at your excellent page and wishing the gig opportunities in Sydney AUS were like NY. Loved your article about Jazz Octengenarians. So on the money and truly insiring - beautiful!

With love from Australia,

Celie
