Music Theory Club
Posted February 1st, 2011 - 8:59 pm by from Milwaukee, United States (Permalink)
Hey all,

Would anyone be interested in forming a music theory club? I've been playing music for years, but consistently circumvented a lot of theory - triads and suspended fourths, that kind of thing. Now, of course, I'm realizing how useful and fascinating it is.

My idea is to meet once a week or once every other week, pairing the musical talk with some dinner or brunch, depending on who's hosting and when. People could feel free to bring instruments, too.

I've noticed that unless I have others with whom to kindly ricochet ideas, I am slow as a snail at learning this stuff. Maybe some of you feel the same?

I'd be happy to host the first time and could whip up some ice cream and other goodies! Let me know if you're interested!

yea i would be interested. as an audio engineer, ive studied theory in school and i play some piano, but i would enjoy going over it and learning more. What kind of theory did you have in mind though, classical, pop, jazz?

Hi, I just joined this group and saw this posting. Are you still looking to meet up to discuss music theory?

I have some background in theory, but like you would like to expand my knowledge.

Totally down. When/where? Let's do this!

This is looking good! I'm located in Astoria, I figure we could either:

1) Meet at someone's apartment and swap ideas/knowledge
2) Meet at Central Park/Astoria Park/Etc. with some instruments (picnic style)
3) Rent out a room at Astoria Soundworks (which has great gear, go there all the time) for an informal jam session/lesson and then split the cost of renting.

Just let me know what works best for everyone, some good dates, and we can set something up and maybe even make it a recurring thing.

Hi all! Wow, last year I was checking the thread after posting for a few weeks and didn't see any response, and CS didn't notify me that any of you had posted until today!

This is wonderful that you guys have been interested and I hope you've been able to coordinate some meet-ups. In the long interim since last Feb to this April, I moved from NY, but I really hope the thread has helped you guys start something.

If I'm ever back, I'm totally retroactively joining the theory club!

Any recent plans with this club? I am a classical singer living in Sunnyside, and I would love to work on my theory skills for composing and...especially as I'm applying to grad school next year. OOF extrance exams.

hi i recently moved to new york and am a musician AND suggest a meeting for the music theory club.

likely people will be coming in with different knowledge levels, but maybe we could break into small groups if it's too diverse. or we could all meet with the goal of discussing one topic in music theory, for example tritone substitution or a certain cadence pattern. AND/OR if anyone has any incredible music worth sharing that could be cool.

how about saturday 10/6 in the afternoon somewhere in brooklyn?

This sounds like a great idea!
I'm definitely in. Eventhough I might not be free on Saturday.
But I'll just join you the next time :)

I would really like to meet and talk about or make tritone substitutions. If anyone's down let's work something out!
