Hi All,

In all of the rural areas I have been, I have noticed that the sky is always more beautiful, and at night the stars are always brighter (in most cities, smog gets in the way or the lights are too strong you hardly notice the stars).

My idea is a black and white icon, mainly because it suggests simplicity. say a square, a rectangle or a circle with a couch (can be red couch so it contrasts nicely and suggests the CS system) and stars dotting the sky. we all see the same stars.

Something like Baptou's profile photo. except that it's nighttime and instead of him, the couch.

maybe we can have a way to upload the icons we imagine? and then we vote or put elements we like from one icon to another? there maybe those who can draw better than they can describe :) i hope i made sense.

thanks!

HI,

This discussion is a bit confusing (for me)! When a read the tread from top to bottom, I notice that some people comprehend under rural, “natural landscapes”: nature reserves with trees, flowers, mountains, water springs … And others understood “agricultural landscapes” with farms, arable land, meadows and livestock’s, goats, chickens, sunflowers, corn, …

When I should use the CS-search engine and the Icons for a rural couch, I would like to know if my rural host lives in a natural area or in an agricultural area… or even maybe some ware in-between in a rustic little village.
All rural… same same but different :-)

So I suggest not 1 rural icon but 2 or 3!

The challenge for an icon design should be (for my part) 1 clear rural icon with 3 noticeably differences between nature, agriculture, and rustic.

PS: I did some research the last weeks and gone setup a rural couch surfing team/group in Belgium. But we need at least 2 (3) icons to make it works.

Greets

Yves

My thoughts on this are that maybe we should choose a few of the designs that people have suggested, and if Jose is willing, get a few mock-ups made of them.

Then we will all have a better idea of what we are dealing with and what would look good on the profiles and what would look good on the maps (they are two different things)

Personally I like the idea of the scarecrow in a field. Has a feeling of working, but still a little whimsical.

But this icon may not translate too well to the maps that are being developed. Maybe they will, but I feel that a tree there would be a better icon. Gives an impression of strength, sturdiness and resilience.

As to breaking up the icon to country or region specific, still not a great fan of it. We could be in danger of stereotyping a country, or even confusing people about the Rural CS idea.

But spinning off from this, why not a different icon for the type of farm or rural area that each person comes from.
A wheat farm is different from a vegetable farm, is different from a sheep farm or a dairy farm.
Maybe a different icon to represent the farm type could be useful.

Hmmm now unless Jose is really helpful, or we can get the media team involved, I feel that I may end up getting dirty and mocking some of these up for us.

Give me a month and lets see what happens......

Yep let the whole thing get decentralised.
I for one am happy to get involved with this in the West of Australia, don't know about the WHOLE of Australia, but perhaps...
And when each area has a group they can decide their own rural icon.

Cheers,
Ciya

What a great idea.
The stars are the one thing you always see better when you get away from the cities.
This gets my vote

I do agree with you all that one great thing about getting out of the urban areas and into the rural parts of the country, is the ability to see the stars.

My only concern is if we use stars as part of the icon, it is not immediately obvious to many "city goers" that this means a rural area, and maybe not someone interested in astronomy or astrology.

Personally I feel a "land" motif rather then a "star" motif would convey the idea of Rural CS better. Getting back to your roots, getting back to the land, the earth.

Stars are great, but I think they are more the icing on the cake rather then the cake itself.

hello everyone,

honestly, for me it does not need a seperation between different kinds of rural hosts, because as it is with couchsurfing in general, every host will be different and every stay unique.
i would prefer to train travellers in a way that they put enough effort into reading the profiles of their future hosts and finding out if they like it or not. so if a (rural) host describes the conditions and circumstances well in his/her profile, everything should be sweet. what do you think?

guess many people who would find out about rural couchsurfing would not read all the faq and so on and just try to find a place to sleep (+work) and maybe get more confused by seperations.

all the best,
pesef

Personally I don't think there is a current need to be worrying too much about the logo that we want to use.
There are more important things that need to be worked on first before we start to dedicate serious thought and time to the logo.

At the moment I would suggest we instead turn our thoughts more to the definition of what "rural" means for each country and then work up from there.
At the moment we have an icon/logo that we can use, but it can be changed later when we have more structure behind it.

Just my thoughts,
Daniel
