Traditionally it has been the Auckland CS Group that puts this together every year but this time around I'm hoping to bring some Wellington-based folk to the party.
I went to this last year where we had 40-odd people in attendance and it was a fantastic time.
I'll be able to take 3 myself there and back but hopefully we can get more drivers
So read the info below (ripped straight out of the Auckland event listing) and if you're keen, fill out the registration form below so we can organise logistics and get this delegation together!
The form is at http://bit.ly/1dbTuyU
Be sure to specify you're from Wellington!
The world famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing track is an awesome one day adventure, walking across active volcanoes, with spectacular and unique volcanic terrain.
You can see a cold mountain spring, old lava flows, active volcanic craters and thermal steam vents, not to mention the brilliant emerald and blue lakes - and beautiful native forest to finish.
See the special alpine flora and fauna of the Tongariro National Park, and magnificent views to mountains and lakes of the central North Island.
The Crossing is a day-hike section of the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk.
The brochures describing the walk can be found in the link below - In English, German and French

Stuff that would be handy:

Programme for the weekend(note, this could change so prepare for flexibility)
Friday 24 January 2014(Travel Day)
Travel to Turangi and camp for the night. I would suggest that you have dinner on the way. Remember that if you are arriving late the takeaway outlets in Turangi may be closed. Those that know they'll be arriving after 9pm should ring up holiday park to make sure they are booked in and can pay by credit.
Saturday 25 January 2014(Hike Day, Alt: rain day/Sunday timetable)
We will wake up early and jump on the bus by 7:30am..
After the hike, we can head off to the Tookanu Hot Pools. They are located on the main road in Tokaanu and have offered a special deal for us at $8 for the private pools and $5 for the public pools. It is advisable that you consider going to the hot pools after the hike to soothe the muscles.
At night, we will return to the campsite and have a BBQ there.
Sunday 26 January 2014(Adventure or Chill Day; alt hike day plus Laneways and Wellingtonians Return day)
We can head to Taupo and go to Spa Road. This part of the Waikato river has a hot waterfall and it is a scenic place to relax and have a great time.
If it is really warm, we can alternatively swim in Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand with pristine water (remember not to use soap so that we do not pollute the water).
Other activities can be decided at the campsite.
Dinner will be a BBQ again.
Those wanting to leave to head back can do so (Wellington does not have a holiday on Monday)
Monday 27 January 2014(official event ends)
Although this will be the official end to the event, this doesn't mean the fun has to end here.
Most people enjoy convoying back to Auckland via Rotorua, stopping at some pretty sweet spots on the way through and all of it free to checkout and do...in the past, a group of CSers have managed to extend this long weekend to a five day extravaganza! here are pics of some of the fun we'd got up to right after the crossing:https://www.facebook.com/pages/CouchSurfing-Aotearoa-New-Zealand/325105530835936?sk=photos_albums
Hopefully this is all the info you'll need but don't hesitate to contact myself(Thomas) or one of our awesome event team via here or directly!
Sweet As and Cheers!
