Herring Island is a tiny little island in the Yarra river only 3km from Melbourne CBD. It's also a sculpture park and great place to relax and have a barbecue or picnic, surrounded by nature in the middle of the city!
You can only get to Herring Island during the summer months, when a $2 punt takes you across the river.
The park has free barbecues and picnic facilities.
To get to the punt landing, start at Alexandra Gardens in the CBD (just across the street from the Arts Centre), and follow Alexandra Avenue on the south side of the river past the Church Street bridge until you get to Como Landing after a bend in the river. It's a short bike ride or about a 40-minute walk. Alternately, you can take the 605 Gardenvale bus and get off at Como Park, and continue along Alexandra Ave from there.
