Wedding Film Night: Almanya - Willkommen in Deutschland

Organized by Joachim K
By popular request for a German film, for Wednesday I chose »Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland« (2011, Germany): In my opinion, an audacious attempt at a humorous treatment of Turkish Gastarbeiter's experiences in Germany from the 60s until today. This decidedly populist comedy by Turkish-German sisters Yasemin and Nesrin Samdereli makes shameless use of national stereotypes to show up the absurdity of stereotyping. The story flips between two time frames as it examines the lives of three generations of a Turkish family – from patriarch Hüseyin’s arrival in 1964 Germany as the 1,000,001st Gastarbeiter (guest worker) to his present plan to return to Turkey with his children and grandchildren.

I will show the film on a projector in the original language with English subtitles. Some snacks and beer will be available and everyone is welcome to bring something to have before or during the film. My place is smoke-free. I live near Holländerstr/Aroser Allee (bus 120/128) or a short walk from U8 Franz-Neumann-Platz.

The address info will be sent at 5pm to everyone who has signed up. Note that CouchSurfing will *only* send this message to your registered e-mail account and it *won't* appear in your CS inbox! Feel free to PM me if you need the info earlier or later, but I might not be able to get back to you in time.

Every Tuesday in October at 8pm, I will show two episodes of Game of Thrones Season 1. If you've heard about this show but haven't watched it yet, now is the perfect opportunity to catch up. If you have seen the show, you'll be looking forward to watching it a second time around.

I will also show repeats of seasons 2 and 3 before the new season picks up next year.
