• Hey guys!
Just got back from an AMAZING year of couchsurfing all over the world. I lived for the most time this year in Lyon and Seattle, and in both cities the CS groups had a weekly Happy Hour/Meetup. "Meetup" is a funny word that intimidated me at first, because I didn't have that much time to spare. Fortunately, in both places it was just a chance to meet and drink with locals and travelers coming through the city. The essence of couchsurfing, non?
And now I'm wondering...WHY don't we have one too?!
I propose Thursday nights. Any recommendations on location?
    Let's make this happen!

I posted two links at the bottom with Happy Hour listings. You can search by neighborhood on both pages. Though a few listings on each site are inaccurate but most seem to be up to date. I like the Ortlieb's one because it is 6-8, allowing you to get two Happy Hours (Dos Segundos 4-6) within walking distance of each other and live music that starts at 8:30.

We have had pretty good success with organizing bar hops on Thursdays. It's seems to be a good day for a lot of people.

I'm not sure how you envision it, but given Philly has so many great bars/places with excellent happy hour specials, it's definitely better to pick an area of the city each week and hop around instead of going to just 1 place every week.

The 2 places that I find to have very good HH deals are Dark Horse pub ($2.75 all draft beers and I believe 1/2 off apps) and Triumph Brewery (1/2 off all drinks, including their 8-beer sampler for $6!, and select apps for $5). Both places are huge and can accommodate large groups comfortably. They are also surround by many other bars that you can go to afterward.

One of the things you can do is download the Philly Happy Hour Guide app on your iPhone. The information on there is a bit old, but it's a decent start. Another idea is to pick one of the bars on this Philly top 50 list each week (call ahead to see what HH they have): http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/news-and-opinion/cover-story/phillys_top_50_bars-38465689.html

Some of my other favorite bars, in no particular order:
    - Ortlieb's Jazz Lounge (great blues band every Thursdays)
    - Frankford Hall (German style beer garden)
    - North Bowl (bowling, pool, games, etc.)
    - Kraftwork (beer samplers of your choice)
    - London Grill ($3 small plates during HH)
    - Devil's Den (beer samplers available, but fixed)
    - Devil's Alley (beer samplers of your choice for $2 each)
    - South Philly Tap Room (best bar food, best coffee shop, Ultimo near by)
    - City Tap House (outdoor seating, huge location, beer samplers, HUGE selection of draft beers)
    - National Mechanics (good selection of beers and decent food)
    - Boilermaker (newly opened, very interesting ambiance)

Anyway, if you need more recommendations, I'll be happy to list more places.

Al thanks for the list of bars, you saved me a lot of time :)

I know its a bit last minute but me and my surfer Pawel (http://www.couchsurfing.org/people/pawelgrocholski/) are decided to check Ortlieb's Jazz Lounge tonight.

Everyone is welcomed to join us! PM me if you need any details =)

Oh I forgot we are going to be there at 9.30 pm.

Great idea! I know a bar at South and 2nd street. Tuesdays; beers, whiskey ginger, gin tonic, and some others cost $2!

Thursdays are OK for me! Let's do it.

Dang it, saw Ilsiya's post too late! Been wanting to go out for some music tonight and Ortlieb's would have been perfect. Oh well.

Regarding the happy hour, I just wanted to share what I know when I visited San Diego: they have a regular CS "Tipsy Tuesday" which happens at a different bar every time (sometimes out of the city to accommodate hosts/guests that are not downtown -- right, Caleb/Mike? ;-). Michelle's idea is good though since not everyone can make it on a specific day. How about rotating days, like Tue/Thu one week, then a "Philly Phriday" so we don't have to go work/school with a hangover? :-) Confusing? Yes. Even without alcohol.

Great recommendations! All of these sound like a lot of fun. I'm really excited about this idea!
Personally, my schedule is a bit more accommodating for Friday this week, since I'm only free from 6 until 8 on Thurs. However, if Thurs works best for everyone, I just won't be able to make it this time. Thoughts on days for this week?
In any case, I'm leaning towards either Dark Horse or the Good Dog Bar! Thoughts on those two?
I'll create the event once we decide exactly where.
    Cool, guys :)

Dark Horse is a MUCH larger place so it's better for a bigger group. Parking is easier around there at that time too. I like Good Dog, but it's definitely too "cozy" so you'll have a hard time finding rooms for a bigger group. Of course, the down side is that Dark Horse is in the South Street area that isn't near any subway stop.

    Hi all,

Great initiative. I'm an Aussie travelling through the US and am also new to CS, I will be surfing in Philadelphia from Wednesday to Saturday and would love to come to the drinks and meet all you fine people. Went to a drinks in Hawaii and it is a great way to connect and meet people.

    Ansley,
I hope you don't mind here, but it looks like there are quite a few people are up for Thursday and we can't make it any other night this week. I'll go ahead and create an event and play host Thursday at Dark Horse since you may not be able to make it (it will be easier to make changes to the event that way).

No worries, let's get this thing started! My couchsurfers and I might be able to show up if they're not too tired. Otherwise, have a great first week, and I'll see you guys next week!
    Cheers :)

    Hey everyone!

So...do you think Dark Horse (which was my favorite pub when I lived in Old City btw, what a great choice!) would be showing the VP debate...? If so I'll definitely be there by 9pm.

    Hi,

my name is Zeno I just moved to Philly and I don't get if you already agreed on a bar. I would love to join.

Just one Question. Is it a big problem I'm under 21 although I don't drink????

    Have a wonderful evening,

    Zeno

Yes, Most places will card you, If they serve food then you are permitted there until you finish your meal :) just eat very very slowly. Also if you are with a big group I highly doubt they will ask for I.D never the less as long as it isn't a bar or club shouldn't have problems.

I also do a weekly bar meet more towards CC on Fridays. We do pitchers over there and it is a flat rate for everyone and drink as much beer as they want 8-10:30.

I haven't been to BH before I look forward to it :D!

    Hey Zeno,
Welcome to Philly. Most bars in Philly that serve food will card you individually, instead of a security guard at the door. The waitstaff or the bartender will do the carding if you order alcohol, otherwise they won't. This is the way it is at Dark Horse. You can stay as long as you want, so long as you don't drink alcohol. No need to eat slowly. No one is going to kick you out just because you finished your meal and want to hang out with your friends. Of course, if you try to take a sip of someone else's alcohol and they see you, chances are they won't be happy about it. For the rest of us, we could be charged with providing alcohol to minor if we buy drinks for you.

In other words, come on out and join us at Dark Horse since you don't drink. We are not sure where we will go after that, so it's possible that you may not be able to get into those places.

    Hey Nick,

I just noticed your event is showing up for tonight instead of Friday. There's probably a couple of confused people aside from me by now :-)

    Tal,
The Dark Horse HH is tonight. Nick's event, a completely separate one, is suppose to be for Friday, but for some reason it's showing up for tonight. Rodel is just generally confused regardless :)

    Tal,

Al is right, so sorry for sharing my confusion. Come to Dark Horse *tonight, Thursday* and you can smack me for this. On the hand. All five fingers. Or a punch. On the fist :-)

Good to know you made it, Tal! :) Not sure why I didn't get to meet you last night but remind me next time -- I owe you a drink.

It was a GREAT night all around. Glad A LOT of people made it. At one point, every single person in the group (I think there were 12 at that time) was from a different country. We had at least 20 people there and some left before others came. Can't ask for a better group and DH was definitely a GREAT place.
