if you want to conquer mountain kinabalu, you should book it firstly, because it is two days travel, and will be arranged the hostel on the half way to the mountain. no book, no permitted.

so there is no chance of getting there from KK early in the morning and climbing it in one day? or can you recommend some hostel near mount Kinabalu where I can stay for a night and where I can arrange it? thanks!

you can do 1-day-hiking, check the weather, get 1 or 2 companions or do it alone. Pick up a date, take a bus from KK to Kinabalu park (RM10-15), then make your booking (only 4 permits are given per day for 1-day-hiking), then you can hike on the next day. You can overnight at the hostel just 200m away from the park (by walking). :)

how much does the 1 day hike cost and at which altitude does it start?
    Private_message
well, it's about 150 - 250 MYR if share with 1 or 2 people. I'm not sure which altitude. But be prepare that there's such thing called CUT-OFF time, where you have to make it to certain point at certain time.

If i m not wrong then for foreigners it cost around 600-800 MYR, including one night stay at the laban rata, nd then cotinue to witness sun set at the peak... Yah! you need to reserve first
    Private_message
Well, there are two options - relaxed hiking or extreme hiking. Extreme hiking allow you not to stay overnight at Laban Rata which cost 100 USD....

100 usd for one night... the most ridiculous price for a mountain lodge i've ever seen :D in himalayas they charge 2 - 3 usd, for 2 persons

Because it's operating by Sutera Harbor, a Singaporean company. And maybe due to other factor, also the food there not yet included, perhaps the food you can get in KK for 5MYR, but maybe 30MYR up there. Sorry, I don't mean to make it sound horrible.

Just one word of caution guys. Enjoy Sabah but stay in Sandakan, KK or the West towards Sarawak & Brunei. Stay clear of Lahad Datu, Semporna & Tawau right now. U have most likely heard of the Filipino rebels entering this southern part of Sabah. They are police & military checkpoints at regular intervals causing long traffic jams, & tanks guarding our towns, cities & airports. Please keep far away. Travel restrictions may leave u stuck in one place & not able to move on if they are enforced, which is increasingly likely....

Stay safe & enjoy Borneo, Dan

It was isolated to one small village but now spreading & a state of emergency has been announced

Better not to go Sandakan as well if you are travel by road as there is a crossroad to either Sandakan or Lahad Datu/Tawau.

Sandakan is currently safe but there is a visible police & military presence as it is not impossible for the rebels to reach there too. There is a junction 60 km/40 miles from Sandakan & there is ALWAYS checking there anyway, 23/7 365.... I would check the latest news from Internet & media or phone ahead to CS hosts or hotels, or visit a local Tourism Malaysia branch before u travel. This problem has spread very quickly & a state of emergency has been announced.
