• Hi, I would like to do some trekking during my time around Yunnan. I know that Tiger Leaping Gorge is very popular, however, this trek is only 2 days long and I would like to do one that is a bit longer, 5 - 7 days if possible.

Does anyone know of some treks i could do? Or a place where I could seek out some information about doing them.

I would prefer not to do a package tour but I am open to ideas.

Are there any english guide books available for trekking in the area?

    Thanks

Try heading up to Dechen/Kawa Karpo - tiger leaping gorge is on the way.

    here's how:

You can take an overnight bus from Kunming to Shangri-La. If you want, you can ask the driver to let you off at Qiaotou, which is the trailhead for TLG. It's awesome, but if you are pressed for time, skip it and go to Dechen/Kawa Karpo, which is MUCH better.

At the bus station, by a bus ticket to Dechen (Diqing). You might be able to get one for that day, but as each of these bus rides is 8 hrs or so, that might be longer than you want to be on a bus in a single day.

There is a day's worth of things to do in Shangrila if you want to stay the night.

The ride of up Diqing gets awesome, but once there you need to get on ANOTHER bus for maybe 2-3 hours that takes you out to Kawa Karpo. I don't remember the name of the trailhead town, but if you have a guidebook or ask, you can find it easily enough. There are some guest houses there (I stayed the night in town and left the next morning).

head to Yubeng (a million different spellings. That's about a day. If you set up there for a few days there are 2-4 GREAT day hikes around that area. You can walk out a different way than you came in if you want.

All in all, this is probably longer than 5 days, but absolutely worth it.
    Hope that helps

This trip sounds epic and I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Would love to join you if you'll still be in China in March. I'm flying to Kunming on the 5th March. Let me know if you need a travel buddy.
